Persistence of terbinafine in the hair of cats after 14 days daily therapy

Abby Foust and others, University of Florida, Gainesville

Terbinafine has been shown to be an effective agent for the treatment of dermatophyte infections in cats. The drug is known to persist for long periods in keratinised tissue in humans and so a study was conducted to investigate its concentration in feline hair after 14 days of oral treatment.

The half life of the drug was 1.84 weeks and it remained at or above the minimum inhibitory concentration of the causative organism for 5.3 weeks.

These findings suggest its possible use as a pulse therapy against feline dermatophytosis.
