IS YOUR SUPERPOWER TALKING TO ANIMALS (AND THEIR OWNERS)?
If you love working with, and talking to, people as well as pets, we want to speak with you!
Here’s a bit about us, the role and our aspirations for you…
We are a proudly independent, award-winning three site Small Animal Practice, fully owned by Steve T and Holly C. We describe the Practice team as dedicated, hard-working and fun-loving, who always pull together to provide animals the best care. We have a passionate vision to maintain a culture where individuals can flourish and excel, and lead the way within the profession.
Our team has grown over the last 8 years, and we now have over 50 employees who work across our Practices in Portishead, Nailsea and Yatton, all 20-30 minutes South of Bristol. However, we still have the team at the heart, and the personal feel from being independent.
We have a wealth of knowledge and a diversity of skills amongst our 14 Vet team. Mario (Group Medical Director), Cristina and Katy are all Advanced Practitioners, and we have vets who have either completed or are on their way to completing certificates including medicine, imaging, surgery and exotics. We even have a TV vet among us, James, who works on “The Pets Factor” (CBBC), Morning Live (BBC) and The Pet Show (ITV). We are extremely proud of our awesome team of nurses, clinical support, administration and reception staff too.
“One major selling point about working here (that I'm loving!!) is that the Management Team care about making sure we don't overwork ourselves. From my experience, things like being able to leave on time, and getting time back in lieu when that's not possible, are pretty unheard of elsewhere!” Vet Louise.
We say yes to some slightly different things from hosting wet-labs, testing products for manufacturers or just leading the way with some initiatives. For example, we work closely with The Guide Dogs as we are one of only two sites outside the Guide Dog Centre who are approved to take hip and elbow x-rays for their breeding stock. We are a Real Living Wage Employer, meaning our entry level pay scales across the whole team start well above the National Minimum Wage, and we are very proud of this affiliation. Amongst other things being independent also mean flexibility with rota and encouragement for development within a supportive environment.
Our culture is one of gold standards in all we do, unleashing the potential of our whole team and forward-thinking development of the Practice. We do not do the dreaded yearly appraisal, instead we have 1:1 catch ups every other month and an open-door policy, so we always know how you are. We have whole Practice meetings three times a year, where we shut all the sites and get together over lunch. We also have vets’ meetings every couple of months, where we discuss clinical cases, ideas and protocols.
Our expansion plans for the Portishead Practice completed in May 2022, which resulted in an onsite CT scanner, bespoke exotics ward and consulting room, additional theatre space, additional species-specific consulting rooms, and office space for the team. Portishead is also home to hydro.vet our rehabilitation service offering hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and laser treatment. Our Practices at Yatton and Nailsea have both undergone recent complete refurbishment too making all three sites a great working environment with all the routine equipment.
We are currently working towards our Investors in the Environment Bronze Award and have implemented various sustainable initiatives as a result. We have the aim of being THE Vets of choice for clients, pets and staff in North Somerset. Is it clear yet that we have big ambitions about what we do, where we are going and who is going to get us there!? Do you want to join us for the journey too?
We know it isn’t all about working with cute pets… Well maybe it is a little but don’t take our word for it check out:
About the Role:
This is role has become available as one of our team is heading back to an academic environment to train future vets which we think is exciting for the whole profession. (They are going to stay doing some weekend shifts for us too!). This does mean we are looking for a full-time Vet, with at least two-years of experience to be able to join the team to undertake a mix of consulting and surgery. The role requires an all-round confident GP but if you have a special interest which needs developing or already have a Certificate then we would be particularly interested in hearing from you.
Ideally, we need someone for 39 hours per week but whether this is over 5 days or 4 days can be discussed depending on your preference (flexibility!). With you on board there is a fair share of OOH shifts* to be done and 1:12 Saturday mornings. (*If you really want to know what fair share is, with you on board it would mean 1:8 weekends with Monday as a paid day off and 8 weeknights in a 16-week cycle – yes 1 night every other week!). We are committed to doing our own out of hours, as this improves case continuity and removes transfer hassle, and of course hugely benefits the patient and their owners. We firmly believe it’s also an opportunity for personal and professional development too.
This role is likely to be predominately based at our Yatton Practice but all our vets are contracted to potentially work at any of our sites. Many of the vets regularly work from two sites which means you get to see different clients and most importantly spend time with a greater number of your fabulous colleagues.
Generally, over the course of a day you will see a mix of consults ranging from the routine healthcare to emergencies. You will have time to do procedures, dentals, medical case work ups, follow ups and have a break for your lunch. Our clients are great. They come to us knowing they will receive excellent pet care, a welcoming smile, transparent pricing, and a professional service throughout.
“I've had a really good experience with starting to work here. It's especially great seeing how close knit the team are and watching everyone work together so well. I have been made to feel really welcome and been involved right from my first day.” RVN Talia
Well, we know you are committed after reading this far (well done) so are you a Vet who:
All of that sounds like you?! Great – have a read of the next bit too!
As a Real Living Wage Employer, we are committed to paying our staff a decent and fair wage for their work. All entry level staff receive a wage significantly higher than the Government minimum for over 23s and because we love them, and even more than the minimum Real Living Wage. This means better pay for other roles as all roles are banded within a structured pay scale framework which considers experience and additional skills or qualifications.
The benefits you would get include:
“It is a fun place to work, with people who are 100% committed to working hard to produce a great service for the customers and their colleagues alike. I find everyone to be very helpful and I do feel cared for and appreciated.”Insurance Administrator Jude
