Vet at Friendly Unique Charity Based Clinic, New Graduates Welcome
Casvet is the vet practice inside Cheltenham Animal Shelter, half-owned by the Shelter and half-owned by Dragon Vets. We exist to provide a vet service to the shelter (free appointments, cost price medication etc) and to be an excellent low cost vet practice to the local community. We also help by providing a service for other charities as well such as RSPCA and PDSA and some breed rescues. Our appointment fees for members of the public are typically much cheaper than other practices and most of our ops are 30-50% cheaper than other practices. We manage most work in house but we are linked to Dragon Vets so any cases that need something more advanced (overnight hospitalisation, certificate holder imaging, CT scan, heart work up etc) have the option of an in house referral. We run on a 3 vet rota and have previously used vets from Dragon Vet Centre to cover our shifts but now we are looking to take on a 4th vet (ideally a 3rd full time vet in addition to our 2 part time vets but we will also consider another part time position). This also means that this position could also be very well suited to a new graduate as there is plenty of support available if needed.
In the last 5 years we have doubled in size and have had 2 major pieces of building work and renovation so we have a well-equipped, busy and clean practice. Not just all the normal things like digital xray/ultrasound/diathermy/multiparameter machines, but also separate dog and cat wards, recovery/rabbit area, separate theatre/xray/dental.
There is no on call/out of hours, no Saturday mornings and days start at 9am and it's rare that anyone is away later than 630pm. The opportunity would also exist to join the Saturday morning rota at Dragon Vets (1 in 4) should you want to supplement your income further.
This is a position that could suit anyone who enjoys being a good GP vet and working in a great place with a great team, as well as anyone keen to make the most of the facilities available. It might not suit a vet who is keen to tackle orthopaedics and requires overnight 24 hour hospitalisation facilities on site. We use Dragon Vet Centre for our out of hours and 24 hour overnight care and access to a great team with several certificate holders. Our client base is extremely diverse - many people come to us as they cannot afford to go to many private veterinary practices but we also see many owners (often insured) who visit us in order to support the Animal Shelter so there is often plenty of scope to work cases up thoroughly. Likewise, our staff find working at an Animal Shelter very rewarding.
We have 3 excellent qualified nurses as well as a part time Head Nurse. We also have a kennels assistant and currently have 3 nursing students so there is a fantastic nurse to vet ratio which we think allows us to provide a really high standard of care to our patients.
We offer a good rate of pay (commensurate with experience) and some great benefits – a generous team bonus scheme (up to £300 quarterly in 2019), cost price (not just a discount!) treatment at Casvet for your own pets, pension with employer contribution and 5 weeks holiday per year (plus bank holidays). We also will fund RCVS and BSAVA membership fees. Accommodation is available for at least the 1st few months (off site) to allow plenty of time for anyone new to the area to find a place to live.
We might be biased but we think it is a great place to work - a busy independent practice, doing great work for the Animal Shelter (half of any profit we make funds the shelter), good hours, no weekends and a great team (we have a low staff turnover).
Half of any practice profit goes directly to Cheltenham Animal Shelter!
