Taking part in forum discussions and reading or viewing content on VetSurgeon.org can count towards the average 35 hours of documented Continuing Professional Development you have to do each year.

Recording CPD

At the top of each page on VetSurgeon.org you'll see a red 'Claim CPD Button'

Press this and complete the drop down form. The details you enter are added to your VetSurgeon PDR Record. You can return to the page and edit the details at any time.

Your Personal Development / CPD Record

The CPD time you record on VetSurgeon.org is displayed in a part of your VetSurgeon Profile which is visible ONLY to you, under My Account > View My Profile> CPD tab.

By default, the system displays details of your activities for the year to date.

Generate Certificate

Press 'Generate Certificate' and the system will generate a CPD certificate for the default period, which includes an appendix detailing your activities over the period. This can be uploaded to your RCVS PDR.

You can use the date selector to provide details / a certificate for a different period of time.

VetSurgeon.org 'Claim CPD' allows you to document what you've learned via the site, and claim it towards your annual CPD requirement.

WHAT TO CLAIM
You can use 'Claim CPD' to record time spent reading, researching, viewing or participating in any content which can reasonably be argued to advance your knowledge and proficiency as a vet, including forum discussion threads, news articles, events and videos.

FORUMS
In deciding whether to claim CPD for a forum thread, the only question you need to ask is 'Did I learn something relevant to my work?' If you did, then you can claim it as CPD, regardless of whether you actively participated in the discussion or just read the thread.

For example, if you post a question for your peers and learn something from the replies, you can claim the time you spent posting and reading.

If you answer someone else's question, again, the acid test is whether you learned something from the discussion. So if you had to research your answer, or learned something from other people's replies, that does.

You can claim CPD just by reading threads, but clearly you'll be able to record more CPD time if you get stuck in to the discussion.

It's stating the obvious, but to count towards your CPD allowance, the forum threads you claim must concern a subject which can reasonably be argued to advance your knowledge and proficiency as a veterinary surgeon (so RCVS-bashing posts or discussions about the weather won't qualify!)

NEWS
You may decide that reading a short news story hardly warrants creating a record of the two minutes you spent. But if you read a story that caused you to research a subject in greater detail, either on the site or elsewhere, then record the total time you spent on it.

CPD
If you attend a CPD-qualifying event listed on VetSurgeon.org, you can add it to your VetSurgeon.org CPD record. Handy if the event organiser didn't provide a certificate or you lost it!

COMING SOON: As of the 7th September 2015, we are developing a new feature on VetSurgeon.org that will allow you to record your CPD-qualifying activities on VetSurgeon.org in a couple of clicks of a mouse, store them in your profile, and then print out a certificate as needed.

There are two VetSurgeon.org activities which can count towards your annual CPD requirements:

Participating in forums
If you post a qualifying question on VetSurgeon.org and receive a reply, you may count the time spent posting your question and reading the answer as CPD. You should keep a note of what you learned.

If you post a reply to a question, and needed to research your answer, the time you spend researching and posting your answer also counts as CPD. So, if you are a specialist answering a question in your sleep, that doesn't count. But if the question made you think, and you need to check your facts, that does.
