Easy to sit there and blame them for the state of the economy, but I don't doubt that if a Labour government (especially a hard left one) had been in power through Brexit, the pandemic and Ukraine war, we would be in a far, far worse place. Still, the Conservatives haven't apparently taken advantage of situations where they can be taken advantage of (ie Brexit) and on the contrary keep shooting themselves in both feet and one hand.

So on the one (remaining) hand, should I vote for the Conservatives because despite their inadequacy, I am right of centre, and conservative ideals of low tax, capitalism etc most closely align with what I believe in.

Or should I vote Labour because it is time for a change, and every party needs throwing out of power to go and get its act together (or do they?)

Or should I vote Liberal, as an alternative to abstention and because Ed Davey seems like a nice man (I have a lot of time for parents of disabled children, obviously)

Or should I vote green as an alternative to abstention.

Can anyone recommend a non slip harness for a smooth-haired fox terrier?

Hello everyone.

I've just been hit by the lurgy - which doesn't appear to be covid, but I still feel like death warmed up. On top of which a fox got in the other day and there's nothing left of our beloved chickens, Pip and Nugget, bar a few feathers. Oh and I knocked my computer monitor over the other day, which was an expensive mistake!

Hopefully it can only get better from here and I'll be well by our Christmas drinks on Friday.

And as we reach the end of the year, it does seem to me like the 'What would you do' discussion format has legs, and I am looking forward to making more of that next year.

Meantime, a very happy Christmas to one and all.

Should vegetarianism/veganism be the natural default position for veterinary surgeons?
I read this article the other day -https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/dec/28/benjamin-zephaniah-tell-people-i-dont-eat-animals-thing-ill-do-differently

He eruditely expresses my own personal position on this subject.

So, I'd suggest an interesting topic for debate - 'Should vegetarianism/veganism be the natural default position for veterinary surgeons'.

Should generate plenty of differing opinions - I can already hear the galloping hooves coming from Yorkshire...!

As veterinary surgeons, you provide a service for everyone in society, from the richest to the poorest.

More than most, you see the effects of government policies which have created inequality in society, and the consequences of that inequality.

So I am delighted to welcome a friend of mine, Sebastian Chambers, to the VetSurgeon.org forums to discuss his new book: 'The A-Z of inequality - How Governments help the rich and how to reverse it’.

At 26 pages long, you can digest Sebastian’s book in only 45 minutes, and whilst you’ll already be aware of some of the government policies which have fostered inequality, this tightly written and fully referenced book brings it all together for perhaps the first time.

Sebastian is here to answer your questions about how government policies create inequality in society, and although you certainly don't have to have bought or read his book to take part in this discussion, I think you’ll find it £5 well spent.

Our western lifestyle of food always available, commodities from fuel for heating , medical supplies to more usual luxuries produced elsewhere and imported cheaply definitely,
will there be some communities better at survival- well the ones not depending too much on crop survival probably have best chance because once bees etc gone, water scarce (or too much) we not going to get mega tons of grain or be able to transport it
Tangent of: RE: Cop 26 and climate change

More to the point really is what I mean by extinction! Would the human race be able to survive in any fashion? Not necessarily just our modern high-tech western lifestyle but as sentient progressive species on the planet? If we had no technology for whatever reason, then we could not survive indefinitely, surely? eventually the race would peter out on a barren planet! No sc-fi- future of colonising elsewhere just to keep the race going. Until eventually the very last man and woman in existence on Earth would say their goodbyes and we would join the dinosaurs?

I think that would almost certainly be the ultimate outcome of an asteroid strike but following "just climate change"?" I am less sure. Hence my question... could we find our way back to developing technology and building our civilisation to something like it is now/ i.e., generally thriving?

.Is that any clearer Richard?

1. Apecifically for caesareans in cattle and sheep.

2. Forget local infiltration of the flank for anaesthesia! It talkes too long, causes too much bruising and if not caful, sooner or later you will receive a hefty kick from a cow when you are inserting the eg 18gauge needle eg 18gauge, 5cm?> in through the flank to administer th local. Therefore, make a special effort to learn to do a paravertebral effivcietly. It takesa bit longer to do and stil beware kicks butwhen done correvtly it is highly effective and causes no bruising in the flank of course to interfere cwith your surgical wound. nor the healing thereof! combined with an rpidural in cows it is the only way o be recommended!E ews generally do not need an epidural as well though, only ratrely....But; IIn both specis you should hve ample time and more for the procedure this way!

However probably before opting forthe caesarean my main biy of sdvice that I learnt the hard and slower way is relatively simple! When calving a cow and lambing a ewe it ids not possible to useexcessive lubigel! When doing a calving and even alambing aswell despite the size-difference, the amount of Lubigel used should be measured in the number of bottles and not by the number of squirts or fractions of a bottle. If necessary, use 4,5, 6 in a cow to make everything very slippery! You know it makes sense!!
