100% companion animal 4 vet clinic needs an experienced full time veterinary surgeon. Well equipped clinic, purpose built in 2015, including two surgical theatres with fully experienced nursing teams, endoscopy, ultrasound, digital radiography, high level orthopaedics, separate cat only clinic, and no on call. Ideally, we are looking for someone who'd like to stay in this wonderful country for the long term. For those who don't know Ireland, the work may be hard, but the craic is mighty!

BrayVet requires a veterinary surgeon for Maternity cover from June / July 2017 for a variable period, with a minimum of five months. This initial position for maternity cover will be at our main clinic in Bray, but the employment could develop into a longer term position at our new branch clinic in Gorey, County Wexford.

Full time hours, one Saturday in four.

Four vet, four nurse team including a Cats Only section with separate waiting room, hospital ward and consultation room.

Minimum 3 years experience.

Experience and interest in ultrasound scanning would be beneficial.

The petition for changes to Pug/Bulldog conformation is closing in 3 days. We need as much veterinary pressure as possible in advance of meeting between academics/vets in practice/dog breeders at Kennel Club premises this coming Wednesday.

A scientific paper published yesterday states that "In a prospective study of BOAS in Pugs, 88 % of Pugs attending a referral veterinary hospital and 91 % of a general population of Pugs were diagnosed with BOAS based on clinical history, owner questionnaire and clinical examination."

The paper also notes that "normalisation phenomena may blind owners and veterinarians to disorders in commonly affected breeds and constrain reforms intended to improve the welfare of affected breeds".

Signing the petition does not mark you as a radical or commit you to anything other than agreeing that action should be taken to stop these dogs having such obstructed breathing... Just because we are used to them does not make them "right".

Please sign this "vet and vet nurse only" petition on brachycephalic dogs and cats

On Friday, Jemima Harrison (producer of "Pedigree Dogs Exposed") wrote a blog calling on vets in the UK to "stand up and be counted on the brachycephalic issue".

An online petition has now been launched looking for a working party to be set up with the aim of coming up with concrete proposals to tackle the issues, and the organisers (I'm one of them) are calling on all vets and vet nurses who feel strongly about this issue to add their name to it.

Treating strays and wildlife - who pays?

I'm based in Ireland where there is no RSPCA support and vets have to devise their own strategy about what to do about unowned animals. In England and Wales, it seems the RSPCA has a very restrictive policy for Initial Emergency Treatment (stray dogs ONLY when authorised by an RSPCA officer, stray cats, and wildlife only if over 1kg - so only foxes, badgers, large birds, I guess). And a payment of #50 ceiling.

So what do you all do? Do you bother claiming the RSPCA money? And what about in Scotland and N Ireland? I'm writing a blog for the Telegraph on this and I'm curious

For the record in our practice we give first aid at our own cost to all strays and wildlife. If we euthanase, we do that and cremate the bodies at our own cost. If we do anything more, we ask for a donation from the finder. It seems to work although we are left a bit out of pocket but we see it as being part of the community. We once tried to track it by writing everything in a wildlife/ stray file, and it was #10K per year or more, but then we stopped because it was only depressing....

The high cost of using photos on your website without proper copyright

I've just had the unfortunate experience of being sent a bill for using a photo of a dog on my website without properly checking permissions for copyright. As it happens, the person involved was exceptionally reasonable but it could have been far worse. I've written a blog on my experience over at the Telegraph as my weekly "vet piece", and it could be worth vets' while reading, so that you don't get stung by a similar situation in the future.
