The Veterinary Specialist Association is holding a meeting to discuss quality improvement approaches to tackling Brachies.

Please click the link below.

Applying a Quality Improvement Approach to Brachycephalic Dogs - VSA

So not just anaesthetic considerations – but GI and emotional stuff too. There will also be discussion-breakout groups & conclusions.

It will be a fascinating meeting & not just your average “This is how you cut the nasal planum”

The meeting is open to all – indeed any “Resident” can apply for free membership of VSA & get the discounted member rate!

Spaces seem to be going quite quickly, so if you know of anyone with an interest in Frenchies etc……

All best

As many may know I established my dream SA Dental Practice in Harrogate a couple of years back. We are the winners of the BVHA Design award and truly a fantastic place to work. I was in the fortunate position of being able to say "what would the best SA Dental Practice look like?" - and having the resources to then create the same.

I am looking to start to step back from clinical work. The practice is hugely successful and very busy, So this represents an opportunity for someone with a dental skillset (or interested in gaining one) with some business acumen, to have a huge jump up the ladder.

I am willing to consider a whole range of options to help an enterprising individual get onto this path. This would encompass a range of purchase/lease options and (if required) a commitment to providing mentorship.

Are there any entrepreneurs out there still?

If you'd like more details please feel free to email me on Bob.Partridge@VetDentist.co.uk

Best wishes

Great that RCVS is involving the membership, taking soundings, consulting, engaging (or any of the other buzz words they love to deploy)....

The reality is that these meetings involve a day out of work, (plus the need to travel to London) to sit in a room with the great & good.

So how meaningful are these "consultations" when they automatically exclude anyone who is -

1) employed by someone that won't automatically grant a day off work

2) Lives outside of the metropolis - otherwise huge extra expense, travel, accom etc etc - funded by who ?

So - you end up with the opinions of those whose employers feel it is a worthwhile expense to send someone (I guess some will have deeper pockets than a single handed vet) & Londoners as your primary source of "Consultees"..... or the retired with enough money to fund a vanity trip....

What does the RCVS care if Northerners, or those in small practices, or those from the Scottish Isles are completely excluded?
They have fulfilled the "We consulted the profession" tick box

Who else finds this a bit sinister?

Or is it just me?

I haven't seen one for a while so hoping to seek advice about the best treatment plan for a 9 week old westie who has lingually displaced mandibular canines as per photo. They are causing an indentation on the apposing maxilla. I only took a photo of one side due to wriggliness of the pup, but both sides are about the same.

The pup is bright and well in himself otherwise, it's not affecting appetite and was eating treats happily in the consult room.

If this doesn’t work, I’m looking for local referral for crown reduction as really don’t want to remove these teeth if can help it.

Bit of a sensitive topic, I appreciate.

I am hoping to undertake a dental certificate and have been asked to come up with a rough idea of possible fees I could expect to charge once this is completed.

I would hope to be undertaking some of the more basic 'specialist' tasks such as capping teeth, performing root canal and applying braces etc. as well as assessing teeth in juvenile animals with mild abnormalities in dentition.

I'm really just after a very rough guide of the sort of costs these would incur to a client, so I can support my request to have the business subsidise the cost of the course.

Thank you in advance for any help or guidance.

He is FIV/FeLV negative, I have not bothered to check for Feline Calicivirus, just assumed he is probably positive.

I have read all the papers out there recently and I know how difficult these cases can be but just after a bit of advice on next step at this point.

His lesions are severe from the premolars backwards but particularly the caudal oral mucosa, lateral to the palatoglossal folds and even going down into the caudal oropharynx to include mild lesions on his epiglottis (I apologise for the lack of photos). He has no inflammation at all associated with the canines and incisors. I surgically extracted all premolars and molars one month ago and I know I have got all the roots. The extraction sites have healed very well, he only has a thin moderately inflamed line in this area but the gingiva lateral to the palatoglossal folds remains markedly inflamed and he is recently having blood tinged saliva.

He unfortunately vomits on oral meloxicam so currently he is on oral buprenorphine and pregabalin for pain relief. He has had 2 weeks of post-operative convenia as he was too sore to tablet. I hate giving steroids to these cats but in desperation I gave him a one-off depomedrone injection (as I can't give him NSAIDs) to try and settle the post op inflammation down 2 weeks ago, I also started him on oral interferon 1 week ago.

I know that he may require extraction of his remaining teeth but I am doubtful of good improvement given the lack of rostral lesions. He has quite proliferative tissue lateral to the palatoglossal folds, would there be any potential benefit in resecting it?

Does anyone have any experience using cyclosporin for these cases?

Alternatives to Sanos?

Any options- Sanos is prohibitively expensive currently

How to get by when your place of work doesn't have any periosteal elevators?

Anyone got any good ideas on how raise a flap in a cat dental without periosteal elevators? What are acceptable chews for dogs and can I have some evidence to back it up? Specifically this is about antler chews and hard sticks as I have started working in a practice that sells them. I brought up that I have only heard bad things (and seen fractured carnassials) about antler chews and I personally can't recommend them but the practice owner says he has sold them for years and never seen a broken tooth because of them. I would like so evidence and consensus statements to present to him so we can discuss it. I would also like to start auditing the number of dogs I see with worn or fractured teeth as I feel one reason for this may be that vets aren't noticing the problems. If we stop selling these, then what are recommended chews for dogs?
