That’s The Problem

This chapter of Veterinary Controversies and Ethical Dilemmas touches on a deeply personal experience — one I share because it vividly illustrates why those of us responsible for the care of others — vets, vet nurses, pet owners and parents — should NEVER believe a treatment works just because it seems to.

It also explains why pet owners and patients should trust their vet or doctor.

They may not always be right, but they sure as hell know more than you do!

And to vets: don’t be afraid to champion science. You may not change someone’s beliefs overnight. Say it anyway. Explain the evidence anyway. Point people toward what has actually been shown to work.

Because belief feels convincing.

But good quality evidence tells us what is actually true.

If you care about evidence-based care, share this film.

Veterinary AI that can spot lymph node and subcutaneous masses with the accuracy of a board-certified pathologist?
In this hopefully thought-provoking film, I talk about animal sentience with John Webster MRCVS, the father of the Five Freedoms which have shaped animal welfare around the world.

It raises the question of how far we should go with the treatment of animals when they don't have the capacity to rationalised pain or fear, or the benefits of treatment.

The films are aimed both at veterinary professionals and pet owners, and if you think it would be beneficial for more people to consider the issues we raise, please do two things. Firstly, like or comment under the film on YouTube, which will help give the algorithm a gentle nudge. Secondly, share these films. You can share them with colleagues, or clients in practice emails, newsletters or websites.

Movipet

There are two buzzwords that have been doing the rounds in the UK veterinary profession for the last few months: “pragmatic” and “contextual’ veterinary care, both of them in response to the spiralling costs of veterinary care, the Competition and Market Authority investigation, and a growing awareness in the profession that the highest clinical standards don’t serve anyone very well, least of all animals, if they are not affordable.

Some vets I have spoken to dislike the idea of offering ‘pragmatic care’ because for them it sounds like a compromise. They prefer to use the term ‘contextual care’, which buries discussion about “affordability” beneath a wider set of client circumstances that affect clinical decision-making.

Veterinary charities have been practising pragmatic medicine forever, so I went to visit the Blue Cross in London and find out how they define it.

Do they think pragmatism is in any way negative or second-rate?

On the contrary, they take pride in offering pragmatic care for animals. “Pragmatic and Proud” you might say!

What do you think? Do you like the Blue Cross definition of pragmatism and do you agree that we need more of it in the veterinary profession? Post here or join me in the discussion at: https://lnkd.in/eksagrH5

I also make reference to the product's environmental impact, based on the following statement from MSD Animal Health:

“Fluralaner is a modern systemic isoxazoline parasiticide and is excreted overwhelmingly in faeces, with very little being passed out in urine. As with all medicines and parasiticides, excretion into the environment will occur but consideration of the possible environmental impact forms part of the robust regulatory assessments our products undergo. Where the faeces are disposed of via designated dog waste bins or in household waste this will limit environmental exposure, but in the event spot faecal contamination occurs, the active binds to soil and is highly insoluble, which limits the likely spread via water.”

Honeyderm
