Other half is currently renting somewhere that despite assiduous cleaning/heating/window opening is still:
a. incredibly dusty
b. very very damp (mould in bathroom, damp patches on walls).

If the property is that badly maintained, then make sure the boiler is serviced-that's a legalrequirement-and could kill

I suggest cheap not to save money but they seem to pull more water out of the atmosphere than the more expensive EBAC one we have at home.

It will take some time to dry out a long-term damp house (weeks) but it should feel more comfortable in a few days. The running costs will be easily recouped by the lower heating bills. A damp house feels colder than a dry one at the same temperature.

This is not an excuse for landlords to stop maintaining a property but this can make a house more habitable, reduce mould and improve life for asthmatics.

Re: Air quality

Are you a member of the BVA? Their legal advice line is good.

When I got my first job the landlord was playing very daft tricks claiming for all sorts of minor problems and dilapidations that had been signed off as ok when we left. Funny the amount they came to to correct these was almost exactly the sum of the 4 of our deposit cheques (circa £1000). With the BVA legal teams help we all got our money back. Of all the things the BVA does that has to be the best. In Practice hasn't saved me a thousand pounds.

[I always made more than my SPVS subscription back using the salary survey as a negotiation tool each year].
