Don't tend to bother with Irish single malts but has to be Jameson's in an Irish coffee! (incidentally, and JD with coke!!).

Penderyn is the only producer in Wales. They also make other drinks, including a fabulous Baileys equivalent called Merllyn. The English Whisky Company is the only producer in England I believe. Try Penderyn first, but this is also very good. Their Baileys equivalent mediocre though, might as well go for the original. There are various varieties of single malt from EWC. Well worth visiting their site along the a11 and sampling if ever you're passing - it ain't cheap so probably not worth speculating on a bottle if you don't spot it in a bar!

Never tried any of the Welsh or English produce. Other than Penderyn, any recommendations?

Ledaig is indeed very nice. If we are recommending single malts, Ardbeg is a personal favourite. But dont stick to Scotch. Both the Welsh (Penderyn) and English single malts are excellent.

One of our vets is about to leave to do some research in Africa. A client brought him a case of Magners in yesterday afternoon. I'd prefer the single malts every time but definately a nice thought. Obviously not everyone out there thinks vets are money grabbing and heartless.

I think I may need the ibuprofen tomorrow for other reasons as well - first time on a snowboard for 3 months, got 4 hours of riding to look forward so not sure which is going to hurt more!

On the subject of single malts, I am also quite fond of Lochnagar - a sort of sweet and spicey whiskey. Nothing to do with it being my local distillery when I live up there of course. Not a bad mountain as hill-walking goes either.

Better with a splash of Malvern spring water in it.

Lagavulin is good too, and brings back memories of when I was younger and more foolish. 3 of us put away a litre one night, then had a 0600 start the next day for a winter crossing of the Grey Corries, throbbing headache lasted until lunchtime. It was tough old day.

Economy drive as far as malts are concerned! A 12year old single malt from Lidl!! A fairly unbeatable £16.99 a bottle but very mild and smooth.
