It appears to be the usual vet-bashing over fees. It mentions several different cases but doesn't explain what was wrong with the dog that had a £1500 bill or what the outcome was. They also had a request

Re: local paper article on OOH vets
BVA aren't interested in SA work, but to be fair it'sa 2-way thing SA veterinarians don't attend BVA
I used to work in this night clinic before it was Vets Now. It seems that whenever vets are mentioned in the media we are constantly under fire. Fees are the main gripe, but there seems to be a general dissatisfaction with vets from the public. Whether it's Medivetgate or Jeremy Vine on R2, there rarely seems to be anything positive about the veterinary profession these days.
Well, there is an opportunity, albeit fleeting, at the moment to get the "voice of the profession" the BVA to trumpet what vets do.

There is a thread on their rather cumbersome website which relates to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which is the formal jargon for the unacknowledged, unpaid, cooperative and generally reasonable approach so many take.

The only way BVA and I think it should be BVA will moveon this is if they get a kicking for not doing it. There is no prospect of advancing this through request and reason, because they are simply too dedicated to what LA vets get up to. Soooo, please give BVA a kicking in this direction.

If everyone made a point of telling at least 1 client a day that all veterinary surgeons in general practice are £1.5 million philanthropists, and contrasted the ease with which veterinary appointments are made with those at GPs surgeries, and our waiting lists for surgery compared to those of the NHS and our rates of post-op wound infections compared totheirs-and made a point of saying veterinary surgeons, so they were left in no doubt how highly qualified we are, then they might be more grateful

£1500 for weekend care - means nothing as we don't know what it is for; excessive for a nail clip, but reasonable for GDV surgery and 40 hours after care.

The woman with the dog, shouldn't own an animal if she can't find the funds to pay a perfectly reasonable £200 OOH fee, be that with cash or on a credit card. it has just cost me £70 to fill my car with diesel. maybe she should be prosecuted for failing to provide adequate care.

Again, 2 hours for an OOH home visit is not really newsworthy when one considers the logistics of find alternative cover etc. Many OOH clinics I have worked in would not have been able to visit at all. If the farmer had a vehicle he could have brought the dog to the surgery for the quickest treatment.
