Not first line but a useful one to have in the armory.
The Guiness Book of Records used to have 36 as the oldest recorded cat, although I believe this has 'allegedly' been beaten. I have also seen a cat of 26, its daughter was 25 and granddaughter 24, so clearly a good line. As I've not seen a single cat over that age in 36 years I suspect the 36 year old cat was a figment of someone's imagination.

My impression is that dogs particularly are living longer than they did when I was a child, not the average life expectancy because I think that would go up due to more younger dogs not dying of conditions that are now readily treatable, but the increase in healthy years at the end of life. My feeling is that this is not due mostly to veterinary care - possibly better nutrition? Or when they can't understand how the tumour that 'wasn't there last week' has 'suddenly grown to the size of an orange, you can say' 'yes but cancer grow 6-7 times faster in animals because of their animal years', and with the old cat that has become cachectic because 'its been off its food for a week', you can say, 'yes but they are getting older 6-7 times faster than us'. You can hear the grey cells whirring as they take it on board and see the little light shine as they can equate to that. Apart from that I feel the same about the need to have dog and cat years indeed I constantly despair about how stupid most people are and how lacking even in basic anatomical and medical knowledge they are but perhaps I show it which is why I have no clients.

Re: The Daily Mail writes something good!
Who is that stupid that they need to compare this to an age of a human.
er, Joe Public? I know what you are saying, but if that's what some of the public relate to, then so be it.

And do you really not think 22 years for a cat is outstanding? I think that's pretty damn good, especially if they do still have good quality of life.

Re: The Daily Mail writes something good!

:-D. I'm not alone!

22 is old for a cat, yes. Who is that stupid that they need to compare this to an age of a human.

And how do the get 104 from 22?

And however they do it, it's clearly far from accurate (not that it could ever be!). 104 is outstanding for a human, 22 for a cat is good, but not outstanding.

Re: The Daily Mail writes something good!
Seriously, is it just me?!
I DESPISE this NONSENSE of "cat/dog years". Every time I get asked how old a dog/cat is "in human years", I remind the owner that their pet lives on the same planet as them, therefore their 10 year old cat is 10, in Earth years.

Seriously, is it just me?!
