Hoo boy. Who would have thought my little grump would have brought such a reaction? I seem to remember that last Christmas we had a number of "Bah Humbug" posts which were quite favourably received.

OK, I'm sorry, I'm sorry!!! It's "trick-or-treat" and plastic devils' forks I detest. If I were against young people having imported fun, how could I be a rock'n'roll enthusiast?

In my practice we celebrate Christmas (the decorations take a whole day to put up) and Easter and May Day (that's the First of May, not that Socialist thing they have on the nearest Monday) and St. Zita's Day and the Queen's Birthday and My Birthday and that's quite enough fun for one year

I too when young made turnip lanterns. I was also aware that Hallowe'en was All Hallows Eve, that is the night before All Souls Day. Mention that to the trickortreaters, or their parents, round here and they wouldn't have a clue what you were on about. Just as those "carol singers" who bellow two lines of "figgy pudding" and then bray on t'door haven't got a clue what Christmas is.

Come to think of it, they probably haven't got a clue what the origin of "rock'n'roll" is. Hmm. Come to think of it, perhaps that's just as well.

Not imported. Halloween has always been celebrated in Scotland; the pumpkin lanterns used to be turnip lanterns, children of my generation dressed up in outlandish costumes, blacked their faces and visited neighbours for money or sweets in return for a song or recitation, it was called guising. The whole thing is supposed to go back to the Picts, the turnip lanterns being skulls; sadly it has been all but replaced by trick-or-treat and pumpkins, now that is imported.

I think sweets are a good idea. In fact I have some out in the waiting room all the time. It gets good feedback on the pet owners internet forums and is cheap.

As for the figure. I suppose if clients want to see some sort of troll or ghoul they can always look at me. Perhaps im in the fortunate position that I dont need to put up eye catching stuff as it walks through the door every day. From Bald Eagles to this!

What "imported business"? My mum was 'Guising' for Halloween in Dundee in the 1930's and it's still going on in the borders village they live in today!

No Halloween decorations-only Christmas-done by nurses. They banned me from getting involved after 1 year when I put a tree on the floor in the corner of the waiting room. Every male dog decided we'd installed an indoor loo for dogs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We used to do a Halloween display with a guess the weight of the pumpkin contest offering a small prize and the money went to charity. The nurses got disillusioned about it over the years but now I have some new staff maybe I'll start again.

Not at all. In my experience people do not lose their sense of humour because they lose an animal. Our clients are aware of our little ways and most approve of it and the rest tolerate it! They have become accustomed to sharing the consulting room with a couple of tarantulas!

He is only plugged in so he can talk when it is appropriate.
