What a shame the camera is so bad on the iphone. My Nokia and the other half's Sony knock it into the log grass. Still it is pretty and it allows me to make and receive phone calls!

No, i just have no patience. :) and i just use maps, which may explain that I am a technological muppet. :p

Your results may vary. :)[/quote] It should do as the iPhone has a separate gps receiver, it just takes longer. Apple quote that it can take up to 15 mins to get a location from gps only with no signal but in my experience it is a lot less. So if yours doesn't work you have a fault!

Oh, ok. Well, my iphone doesn't work as a GPS if there's no signal. Your results may vary. :)

That isn't strictly true - many A-GPS devices actually combine radio signals from satellites with mobile tower coverage so actually you get better localisation than a normal GPS (and they will work inside etc). So most of them will still work (just potentially slower) if no coverage.

Just a word, though - smartphones are not GPS. They are A-GPS - which means they use mobile towers to calculate your position, not GPS satellites. So no signal (you said you had poor coverage) means no GPS on your smartphone! You may be better off getting a cheap standard satnav.

Hi,

Smart phone sav nav apps were reviewed in the Sunday Times 'In Gear' section a couple of weeks ago. It might be worth seeing if the article is on the internet somewhere. The ST does have a website but you have to be a subscriber to get in.

I use navfree or skobbler. Both free and pretty good. You can buy the speed camera warnings for a few pounds. Sorry it is anon in too much of a hurry to log out and back in!

I've got the Navigon software which is very reliable. It was on offer when I bought it and darn cheap at that time, but I purchased the traffic update and route recalculation bit recently which didn't come cheap (20€ just for this). It does drain the battery as all apps working with gps do, but I connect it to the cars battery anyway, so I don't care.

It gives you the speed camera warnings, too, but not the mobile speed cameras of course.

My husband has an iphone. I'll check when he gets home what satnav app he uses but it is reliable and does get good coverage. Only problem is it does drain the battery quickly. I don't think it does traffic info though. Can't remember the name at the mo but will post later for you.
