Yes, absolutely essential.

Re: All those magazines!
Well, I'm thinking that the best format for this would be as a multi-contributor blog, like this one: http://www.vetsurgeon.org/blogs/chronic-pain/default.aspx

You'd supply me with your spreadsheet, Niall, and I would upload an entry for each one:

Title: Title of paper
Date: Date of publication
Main entry: Summary and link where available

Then tagged according to equine/farm/companion animal, species, condition, drug

Once Niall's entrys are all online, then everyone, including Niall, can then add additional papers, in that format, as they see fit.

Er, what do you think? Is that a good format for this?

Sounds good although you would also need lead author's surname + journal + volume + page to give you a meaningful reference that can be searched for - or is that too much information?

I'll tidy up the spreadsheet and take out some of the more obviously out of date ones and forward it to you - can I do that as a PM? If not perhaps you could mail me with your email address.

I think this is an excellent idea and if it isn't too tricky to use I might start to use it instead of my beloved spreadsheet!

When you have a grand total of 6 magazines turn up in 2 days as I did last week you tend to loose enthusiasm rapidly!

I have a filing cabinet full of articles I have kept over the years but it is getting a bit squashed as it has not been weeded out at all. There are probably articles in there which are 10 years old and not really relevant any more. I am trying to keep relevant ones now as pdfs or just references which is probably a bit more searchable though I have not been nearly as organised as Niall. An easy reference section on here could be pretty useful.

Re: All those magazines!
I read these Alex, thanks
I think having an indexed file in a public area with links to articles on the web would be tremendously useful. We often want information quickly and having a central resource reference for 'that article I saw in Vet Times in ...what was it March?' would be grand

I have 7 lever arched files full of articles under skin, orthopaedic etc headings. The hassle is carrying them about and updating them

I've thought of another idea. How about I set up a new collaborative blog where anyone who sees an interesting piece of research can post a short summary + link, and categorise according to species.

i.e. Niall, post the contents of your spreadsheet here, for your own benefit and others. Trouble then becomes deciding which is best, the 2000 article (say) or the more recent book? And how long do you keep them for anyway? I'm pretty sure I still have In Practice articles from the days when it was a new magazine - not sure how relevant or useful they are now.

On the whole though, I find it a relief when I go through Vet Times or In Practice or the like and am able to discard all the papers as not relevant to my work.
What do others do? It's easier now we can access old In Practice etc on line as I don't then feel I need to keep all the old ones just incase I want to refer back - if I could remember where I read that really useful article.
I don't think there is any way I could read every single publication - there is just way too much information around these days; when you include all the business, marketing and financial stuff it is a completely impossible task.

What I do is skim them and any articles which I think might be interesting I add to an excel based index, putting a load of key words in the last cell. The journals are then all filed chronologically so, years later, when I can vaguely recall an article I do a ctrl-F to search this spread sheet, go back to my library files and hey presto, there you are! Really useful articles I will either scan or download an online copy to keep on hard disc.

Having stuff online is useful and pub-med will find most things but you won't find any of the 'popular' papers in it and there are some useful practitioner tip type articles in publications such as Veterinary Practice and Vet Times which you would miss that way (the 2000 cherry eye article I have just posted on the cherry eye thread for example). Also not all the individual journals' online archives are complete - many don't go that far back and some (vet times for example) seem to have articles missing.

Cheers,
