Was on a trip this summer with a bunch of Canadians, and we all got some digital camera footage which I'd like to put into one video. Trouble is, their vids are all in mpeg4 format, whereas mine are AVI files.

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

Hi Martin,

I'm pleased you found "somehow" what suits you!

To be honest Any Video Converter is not considered between the best of the freeware\opensource video converter.

But it still does the job and as far as you're happy with it, that's fine.

I also found another freeware which can join together several types of video, like AVI, MPEG, FLV quite easily. But I haven't tried yet.

Anyway, interesting and wide matter!

Luciano

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

And in time-honoured client fashion, I have bypassed all the profesional advice and gone for the Passing Tramp Syndrome (the diagnosis made by a mate of a mate in a pub at closing time, who has a Biology GCSE so it must be true) and downloaded Any Video Converter. To be fair, it was recommended by the Techs at my wife's school, so was proper advice.

It does exactly what it says on the tin. It's just a skeleton of a programme, but has big shiny buttons, a foolproof operating system and is extremely quick for small vids. The only drawback is that every single time you complete a conversion, a pop-up asks if you want to upgrade to the paid-for professional version, but hey, it's free.

Thanks to all.

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

Thanks, Luciano. May have a look at that - handbrake was excellent to use, but seemed to be more about converting old or unknown vids (including avi) into mpeg files. If I were about 6-8 years more up to date, that would probably be what I needed. Still, if I ever get technophilic, I'd definitely have it on board - the user conditions are worth checking out all by themselves (this software is free - do whatever you want with it......)

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

You can also try XMedia Recode. It's freeware, lightweight and very easy to use.

Here a link to download:

Bit more expensive than DVDFab but it does it all in the background. TSMuxer GUI is fantastic for getting rid of foreign soundtracks, extras etc and leaving just the movie. I back up all mine to a server in the garage then stream them around the house. I do like having a physical disc but the praticalities of not having the kids mess with the discs or bluray player make it a fantastic system.

Ian

PS It is technically legal to make a backup and i think this will be clarified in law soon, but of course I would never sell any of my backups or post them on the internet to be downloaded.

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

I'd go for handbrake myself - great free app :)

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

If you are an enthusiast or a naughty downloader or copier then DVD Fab is great. Do not pay the full price - go for the trial then uninstall it. You will be sent to a webpage offering you a discount! About £20 but does about everything.

If you have Nero just check it doesn't do the job. The full and hideously expensive package will do it but the lite version often supplied with PC's and laptops might just be able to cope!

Don't know about Handbrake but I will give it a go!

Re: Non-veterinary techie question

Handbrake would be the standard open source video conversion software or DVD Fab has a free trial available for their converter software.
