Apologies for the anonymous posting but I'm embarrassed by my inability to work this out for myself and was hoping some kind soul could enlighten me.
I'm considering taking on a part-time vet - if I can find one - to work one late shift

Re: Holiday entitlements for part-timers

I used to work 2days a week, 1:5 on call in one practice as an employee with PAYE and 10 days holiday entitlement a year. At the same time I worked 2 days a week and 1:3 on call for another practice where the boss hates paperwork and paid me as a locum. I now work 4 days a week and 1:3 on call for the second practice, on a locum basis and with the freedom to take holidays (unpaid) and days off as I want as long as the practice can cope with it.

This works perfectly and I do my self assessment (is really not very complicated) myself and HMRC has never queried or complained about my locum status. It is all above board and legal.

Re: Holiday entitlements for part-timers

Hi

Having a part time permanant contract, I have an agreed number of hours in the year I have to work and this includes holiday. In reality I work less as some of these hours are holiday entitlement. Quite straightforward really, you just need to agree an hourly rate.

Good Luck

For the 4 hours a week. 5 weeks (or whatever it is) of annual holiday at 4 hrs per week = 4 weeks off and 20 paid hours.

The sums are skewed by accruing holiday during the 5-6wks of (full time?) 'holiday cover' that equates to many weeks off in terms of 'normal' working weeks.
Is there a way I could pay the holiday entitlement without actually having to give the person time off
Paid holiday is a legal entitlement, and IIRC it is a European requirement to take 4wks, and you can't pay people off for it (unless its when they're leaving your employment and have accrued it).

Re: Holiday entitlements for part-timers

I work 2 days a week and I therefore get 10 days off per year which works out at 5 weeks of hols per year if I was full time.

Re: Holiday entitlements for part-timers

Think of it in terms of days worked, say a 9 hour day so they work 1 day in 5. If they have an entitlement of 28 days then they get 1/5 of that = 5.6 days per year.
