I got the idea for WebLeC when a friend in an unrelated industry told me how she did a lot of training for her company online and showed me the Webex software. At the same time I spoke to a friend in the northeast who was bemoaning it costing him over £1000 to go to Cheltenham for one day CPD after paying for the day itself , trains, a hotel and a locum. I thought there must be an easier way!

Personally, I would not want to do ALL my CPD online - I enjoy the networking and interaction with colleagues at "Live" meetings and of course practical elements cannot be reproduced in full online.

In times of economic hardship there are lots of people who simply cant afford to do all their CPD at live events. There are also an increasing number of people in remote areas or in small practices where it can be very difficult to escape running the business and getting away to CPD. We also get vets from overseas who have no access to CPD material - we have had vets from 24 countries round the world watching our sessions.

The main challenge we come across with our viewers is still TIME - everyone agrees its a great idea but still dont alwayss find time to do it. Some people have taken a day off to do 5 or 6 sessions in one "CPD Day" - in the comfort of their own home.

Others never make the live sessions but make use of our recordings to watch them at their leisure. The obvious benefit of attending the live sessions is direct access to the speakers so people can ask their own questions.

We try to make things as flexible as possible - so the sessions are now available on a PC,Mac,iPad, even on a smart phone or tablet - and our "Flexible subscription" allows people to choose 12 sessions of their choice (live or recorded) over up to two years.

While you must not WATCH them whilst driving we do have people listening to them on their iphone in traffic jams etc!

We go to great lengths to try and find excellent speakers and useful subjects - the speakers are given the remit to make the sessions as practical as possible with lots of tips etc. Some are better than others at this but the same applies to any CPD.

These are not particularly cheap too put on - there is a great deal of background effort with administration, hosting, site maintainence, plus the time sourcing speakers and hosting the live sessions, but I hope our pricing is seen as reasonable at £30 +vat for a single session (less for an F.S.)

One criticism we have seen of some of the free ones available is an element of hard sell by the sponsors. We set up our sessions and speakers and then look for an appropriate sponsor if we are going to have one, so we maintain full editorial control over content and avoid bias.

My surprise when starting this was the reluctance of our professional bodies in the UK to offer any sort of accreditation scheme - we have sought out accreditation overseas. Vet Council for Ireland recognises our sessions and we are currently applying for numerous european bodies and RACE for north america.

I would welcome any comments and suggestions or criticisms and hope that some of you will find our equine sessions useful to you.

Best wishes

Hi Patrick,

I can´t see anything wrong with your post, not much of a rant. You are just exposing a point of view and illustrating it with facts. Something positive could come out of it. Would it be reasonable to ask CPD providers to specify the % of practical knowledge and the % of theoretical knowledge imparted in a course? That way those aiming for a Diploma would choose the best courses for them and those wishing to improve their basic skills and apply them to the day to day practice could choose what they want. Any opinions about it? Would it be useful?

Re: Online CPD- any views

Thank you Michael!
Live CPD is very enjoyable and helps socialising. Sometimes, depending on the speaker, you can learn more from the other vets than from the speaker themselves. The good thing of regional CPD is that you always see the same guys and you end up creating a relationship with other practitioners. You´ll never get it from on-line CPD

On the other hand, on-line CPD is easier to do as you can do it from your home or from your own practice. Therefore it is more likely that you will do it.

Regarding the price I don´t really have the answer and it would be good if someone could enlighten us about it.I guess that the difference between the CPD organised by associations is that it is subsidised, in other words you have pre-paid it with your membership fees, but I may be wrong. I also suspect that on-line CPD is cheaper is because you can reach more people (200-300?) that you would not be able to fit in a venue even if they were willing to travel there. Therefore it is easier to cover overheads and make a sensible profit keeping lower prices. Yet again I would like to hear from those who really know.

Re: Online CPD- any views
learning both avoidable and fun
I simply cannot comprehend how £400 + VAT for a day in a hotel with a buffet lunch is justified for your average practitioner. Add to this the cost of absence either as a locum or an employee and the costs are eye watering. I agree with Mark that meeting colleagues is grand and Bristol University offer evening bites at £25 for 2 hours which is fantastic value. Referral clinics also do very good presentations, Highcroft and Bath Vet Group in our area spring to mind, so thankyou to them.

Our profession has and will continue to employ more and more on a part time basis and as far as I can see the London Vet Show is leading the way in keeping this type of learning both avoidable and fun.

As a general rule many of the problems we encounter are communication problems. You can tell something one thousand times and the other part will not understand it until it is explained in a way it makes sense to them. Having said that, you can take the horse to the water but...

If you think the guy has got potential but there is something "obvious" he just can´t see I´ll be happy to help

Re: Online CPD- any views

Can we do anything about Pedro ^

I also agree with Mark, I´ll miss the bit about socialising. However it reduces costs both to the provider (no venue hire and travelling costs) and also to the participant.

Another thing is you can do it from wherever you are. Last summer I enjoyed a webinar about exotics while I was holding a beer in a beach in Spain. I really appreciated what progress has done for us that day!

Just worth mentioning that there is a new on-line course that helps non-UK vets to adapt to the UK. They can do it once employed or even better before they come over. More information in www.vetabroad.com

If you're interested, there is a free webinar 9pm tonight hosted by www.thewebinarvet.com,on periodontal disease, given by Lisa Milella, sponsored by Virbac

I'm not 100% sure there are places left, but you can try by visiting www.thewebinarvet.com/virbac. If you do get a place, log on in plenty of time, as there is a "lock out" once 1000 people have logged on, and this has happened in the past.

For non-live webinars, there are 5-6 previous Virbac webinars available to view at www.thewebinarvet.com/virbac-webinars.

Free non-live CPD can also be accessed at www.keyskill.com.

I will also add my vote to the RVC ones too - saw a brilliant one given by David Lloyd on topical therapy recently. In fact I have purchased some copies on CD - if anyone is interested in receiving one, PM me.

We have recently launched an online interactvie CPD service for vets working with horses called WebLeC CPD.

Our 6 pilot meetings have seen attendance rise from 24 - to over 230 for last meeting, which we held in partnership with BEVA and VDS to inform people about the new guidelines and forms for pre-purchase examinations of horses.

The PPE presentation and the Q&A session are available in recorded form FREE at: www.bitly.com/weblecbevaPPE

please use the password : b3va to access the video. If you fill in the registration form you will also receive a CPD certificate!

Our one hour long sessions are held on the third Thursday of each month at 7.30pm - the next being on 22nd September entitled:

Colic Decision making: When to wake up the surgeon and what pain relief to use. Presenter: Debra Archer, University of Liverpool.

Thank you very much. I was out on call the night the PPE webinar was on and had assumed that I'd missed it for good. I'll watch it at home one night with a (tiny) glass of wine now. Thanks!

I'm prepared to bet that in a few year's time traditonal CPD meetings will be a bit of a rarity.
Which I think is a bit of a shame. I see local CPD meetings as a chance for vets and nurses to meet up and share their views on lots of things. Also a chance to meet vets who you refer things to and vice versa. I always like it more giving advice on the phone to a name I can put a face to. Ive started showing vids of exotic animal surgery at the start of my cpd events as it also advertises what my practice offers referring vets. It went down very well at the last meeting with lots of people staying on afterwards to watch the fish gastrotomy.

I love the technical revolution, I also like meeting and talking to other vets.

I guess the old adage of "No vet is an island" rings true for me.

Webinars are brilliant - and many are free via drug firms, but using expert speakers who don't necessarily push the product in question too much.

The Webinarvet website is well worth visiting - plus Idexx, which has loads of free CPD.

Personally I would much rather sit at home in comfort to do my CPD than travel to a meeting - especially in the winter after a day's work.
