What are the pros and cons ? Anyone ?

Re: Locum accountants

I agree with how complicated are your locum accounts?

HMRC gives free courses with advice on how to do your taxes and self assessment. I just keep a spreadsheet on my jobs, costs, mileage and income every day and thats it. Never had a problem.

Re: Locum accountants

Hi,

I am a locum and use and highly recommend (as do several people on here) Bertram and Kidson. They are specialist veterinary accountants and are very good at what they do.

I run my locuming as a limited company and it has been very advantageous for tax. I am also, at B&K's advice, registered on the flat rate VAT scheme, which again has been a very good thing!

I have no idea how their charges compare to other companies but they seem reasonable and have certainly saved me more money than they have cost me. Their phone number is (01902) 422992

I have an accountant because I don't have time to do my own accounts or the intelligence/will to bother finding out how to prepare a set of accounts with a profit and loss account, balance sheet, assets sheet etc but I'm sure there must be a book or computer program that will guide you through it. IMO the most useful aspect of a professionally prepared set of accounts attached to your tax return is that HMRC are more likely to accept it and not come sniffing round. I doubt my accountant has ever save me a penny over his fees.

Re: Locum accountants

In my experience 'specialist' vet accountants do not need to cost more than an 'ordinary' accountant. They can save you money and hassle as they are more likely to know what HMRC will accept or not.

We have been fleeced by a local accountant. We engaged him on the grounds that you don't sh*t on your own doorstep. He did/does!

Get quotes. There really should not be a lot to a locum's accounts.

Re: Locum accountants

I don't think the tax affairs are especially complicated but why are there specialised accountants ?

Re: Locum accountants

How complicated are the tax affairs of a locum?

Re: Locum accountants

Bump
