I now regret giving up my HGV license.I pay locums £22/hour plus agency fee, and although I think that is ok, I just wish that they were more motivated in their jobs. some are very happy to see what is there, do what they have to, and then read the newspaper.on the other hand my lcum for this summer(the one that I mentioned bdefore as being treated abhorently and offered slum living) goes to some places that work her to death and think nothing about chewing her out for the merest deviaton from their norm. maybe you get what you pay for or desreve?

as a comparison, I was earning £15 an hour for driving hgv's in 1994/95. It seems odd that driving a lorry 17 years ago earned more money than working in emergency veterinary medicine does today, delivering cutting edge treatment (if you believe their advertising)

No wonder they have problems finding staff then! Although they will often pay a higher rate if they are desperate and have a last minute shift that they can't fill. I earnt the same - £180 for doing a six hour Saturday day shift, and only had to see one patient!

A large provider of OOH care, last time I looked, was offering £180 per shift, or £12.50 an hour for working nights.

So pro rata for a 40 hour week and assuming 20 days or 4 weeks holiday a year, £13.50 per hour would be around £26,000 per annum, so on the low side .

Have a thought for your employer though, and how much you spend on petrol if you have to go further afield.

Your are getting way more than I am, as the boss of a small independent practice.

I employed a vet for what I could afford, but he went elsewhere because I could not afford to pay enough. The practice is now better off and I employ others for more in his place. Discuss it with the boss, they may be willing to increase the rate.

I personally think locums are now overpaid, but people like me have to take time off and will therefore have to pay the going rate.

I get my RCVS subs paid for and £250 cpd (pro rata), no car or housing allowance.

I think you are being underpaid. Locum rates are in the region of £20-£25 per hour, and locum VN's earn around £10- £12 per hour. I know it is not a direct comparison because as an employee you also get holiday pay, sick pay and employers NI paid on your behalf too. Do you get your RCVS subs paid and annual cpd allowance in addition?

When I was doing part time work-15/16 years ago, I was on £10 per hour, so taking inflation intoaccount you're definitely underpaid

I've just been offered a part time job (2.5 days/week plus every other Saturday morning with no on call) and will be on £20,700 with £600 cpd. This works out at about £17/hour. Sounds like you need to ask for a pay rise!

Do you get any other benefits in kind? For example if they pay your rent or even your RCVS subs then they are fixed so would reduce your hourly rate.

I'm not explaining myself well. Say you did a 40 hour week with a package worth £30,000 but £6,000 benefits (£4000 rent, £1000 CPD, £1000 subs) so you earn £24,000 cash. If you halved your hours to 20 per week, but still got the same benefit package then you have a salary of £9,000 but all the other perks. It looks like you are earning less but in fact it's exactly half.

Unless we know your total package then it becomes meaningless. You still need to live in a house, do 5 days CPD etc.

Hi Martha,

I'm on a part-time contract at the moment (work about 32 hours a week + extras covering holidays and where needed etc), I'm only 2 years qualified and my salary works out about just over £12/hour. I'm not paid any more per hour than I would be on what my full time salary would be for doing a 40-hour week.

Sounds a bit low to me, not sure why being part time would mean you get paid less than FT. I would expect to pay a minimum of £20 for an experienced vet. Not having ever worked part time I can't add any further comment for you.
