The vet nurse syllabus now includes scintigraphy, including licensing of premises. Does anyone know what licensing is required, or can point me in the right direction because I'm having real difficulty finding any info on this.
Thanks all

Re: Scintigraphy- licensing of premises, HELP

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

Precise regulations depend on the type of isotope which you would be using (which in turn depends on the type of examinations you would be doing). Most often use technetium 99m which has a short half life, and regulations are therefore not too restrictive. But will depend on your RPA. Basically the RPA will consider the isotope and its half life, and then advise on - handling the isotope carefully in terms of storage, drawing up into a syringe and injecting; safe storage/ disposal of residual isotope/consumables; safe housing and handling of the patient while radioactive; safe disposal of radioactive waste (urine / faeces); personnel monitoring; the procedure itself. ie Specific Local Rules and system of work.

If you're doing scintigraphy, you have a license to use a particular isotope, up to a specified activity limit.

Hope this helps.

Re: Scintigraphy- licensing of premises, HELP

Your practice RPA might be able to help.

Re: Scintigraphy- licensing of premises, HELP

I can't help directly but I'd suggest finding an equine practice that does scintigraphy - for instance Rossdales, or the Animal Health Trust at Newmarket - and write very nicely to them to ask what they have to do.
