ive seen poultry workers with permanently immobile fingers from oil based vaccines, but they do hundreds.

Id avoid the oil based vaccines on both that basis and the skin reactions/lameness etc (which is listed in the data sheet for Cylap)

After accidentally self-injecting myself with a Brucella vaccine as a student and having to have an extra year at college to recover, the potential consquences of self injection are very real to me. I have to say I never though of it with Cylap until funnily enough the Animalcare rep pointed it out - how helpful!

Concerning the 'risk' I'd suggest the frequency of self injection is very low but the potential consequences are high, and so the less hazardous vaccines are well worth considering.

The skin reactions are meant to be as a result of intradermal injection but no suspected association with the vague malaise or lameness. We covered a large number of clinics OOH and it didn't seem to be any particular clinic so I suspect not due to an individual's technique. I was particularly anally retentive about changing needles after drawing it up and avoiding intrademal injection etc but still had a few reactions (lameness/lethargy/anorexia) within 24hrs.

We use Lapinject now as it was the first alternative available and have had no reactions whatsoever (even with the 'interesting' clients who do nothing other than stare at their rabbits, noting every minor quirk, including dropping number, size and consistency and very kindly keep samples for me!).

Anyone ever done a self-injection? Can't recall doing one myself and still have all fingers but don't know what the true risk is to vets.

Just a thought - are these reactions due to some vaccine being given intra-dermally I wonder? If you use the same technique for VHD vaccination as myxo it would make sense that you could provoke a strong reaction.

I make a point of making sure it is all injected subcut and have never had an issue since the vaccine was introduced donkeys years ago.

Were the large numbers of reactions from injections done by the same vet(s)?

Intersting to hear your view Marie. I've been thinking about changing off cylap for a while. This thread is probably just been enough to give me the push.

Seen LOTS of reactions, most were OOH calls from a variety of practices the evening after the injection with lethargy, inappetance and lameness the most common side effects. Metacam and time seem to solve these over 24hrs but skin reactions can be very nasty. Having done vast numbers in one go for a rescue who monitor them very carefully afterwards it is scary how many are affected to some degree so I no longer use Cylap.

But the 5 dose Lapinject vial is cheaper than a single dose of Cylap. Anivac VHD is priced in between but seems a lot less scary if ever self-injected.

We've seen a couple of reactions and have some clients requesting lapinject. My only beef with it is the fact it is a 5 dose vial to be used within a few hours of opening. We are not doing enough rabbit vaccines to ever use the whole vial in a day. I

have used the aniva,c so far no problems. The rep couldn't explain why they recommend injecting over the side of the ribcage , anybody know why?

I have seen lameness following clap. It is all over the rabbit forums also. It oCcurs with lapinject but is less severe. I've yet to see a reaction with anivac. I give metacam and prokinetics when I see lameness( usually forelimb). Hope this helps.

Given Cylap is an oil based vaccine it is perhaps not surprising is causes reactions, more surprising that it doesn't cause more. That said I never saw one but that is the reason I changed to avoid risk of potentially serious operator self-injection reactions .

We've had one very severe skin reaction to Cylap. The rabbit was okay but the lesion was not pretty.
