Good point and a moot one in the Atkinson household. Most of my clients report good efficacy in indoor/outdoor cats and are very happy but my little baskets seem to pick up feral fleas (probably from rodents especially voles) and they jump off and bite Mrs A who then accuses me of not de-fleaing the cats. My argument that at least there isn't a resovoir building up in the house doesn't cut much ice with 'er indoors so they get a dose of Stronghold as well (or Frontline or Advocate or whatever is about to go out of date/has gone out of date on the shelves!) every now and again. If the client has flea problem on Program and complains to Novartis they will send some free Capstar tablets and their household spray. So Program with an odd Capstar seems to be a way to go and you can tell the clients that as a bonus their cats shouldn't get ringworm either with Program. Yippee.

It might not offer the full benefit of frontline when correctly applied, but that is the crux. It does however stop an infestation and unless a patient has FAD the significance of a sterile hitchhiker flea is zero. Not only does Program treat the animal hut also the environment through general pet dander.

I have yet to see a failure.

Re: Frontline, Fiprospot etc....
How about Program injections for cats; a lot of clients see the advantage of not having to remember, or try and restrain the cats, to use a spot-on despite the cost.

I use it for a few indoor only cats and have not found any sign of fleas on them but I am not as confident to use it as the only treatment for outdoor cats. The idea of only using an injection every 6 months for cats is very appealing for most owners and may be the answer to our problem with not being able to compete on price.

Have to say I was very impressed today when a client made an appointment for her 2 cats to get prescription flea treatment after she had to call in pest control to get her house fumigated (she was using Johnsons spot on) and the pest control guy told her to take the cats to a vet - at least someone is on our side!

Re: Frontline, Fiprospot etc....
The flea treatment market is going to be completely lost to vets.
But I bet we will STILL get p**sed off clients who've used a spot-on and 'it hasn't worked' (because they've only done one cat, only done it yesterday, washed the dog afterwards etc) I'm getting very very tired of the flea life cycle chat. I might make a recording of my voice, and just press play whilst staring blankly at them...

I then use a Fiprinol based product that got rid of them in less than 24 hours, and they have not returned. seemed to hit the spot.

Re: Frontline, Fiprospot etc....
Moral: recommend Stronghold and Advocate, or Advantix for ticks.
Until Bayer (in particular) start selling them to the likes of Bob Martins. Advantage under the banner of Bob Martins is available in Morrisons for a heck of a lot less than Advantage.

Drontal Plus and Droncit spot-on are similarly available for a lot less in pet shops.

Bob Martins version of indorex/RIP available for under £9 for a tin.

We recommend Prac-tic routinely with Promeris Duo for those with particular tick problems. The flea treatment market is going to be completely lost to vets.
