Anyway, many years ago when I moved 150 miles from being a vet in Lancs to a vet in Lincs I re-visited some friends back up in Lancashire after just a few months away. While I was there I nipped into the barber's for a haircut and the barber started asking about how my new job was going. I was telling her about it and the lady in the seat next to mine commented that her daughter was in Lincolnshire.

"Whereabouts?", asked I.

"Woodhall Spa", she said, "she has a cat. I think she had it vaccinated yesterday."

"What's her name?" I asked her.

[You can see where this is going can't you... ?]

When she then told me I told her that I had been the vet who did the vaccination. Weird, this small world we live in.

There are two Jonathan Wray MRCVS.

This baffled BSAVA (even though there are two Ian Masons) and Bristol Uni for months

Funny how these things come back to you. My father's name is Alvar Jones, and he's a Welsh boy from the valleys. As a PhD (physics), he's obviously Dr Jones. We'd always thought that Alvar was a Welsh name, but it turns out to be Nordic, and my grandmother had rather admired a newsreader by the name of Alvar.

Dad worked as a rocket scientist for Rolls Royce. His immediate boss was also Welsh, so the lingua franca in the Advanced Research Lab was South Walian. They spent many happy years firing frozen chickens at turbines and making unreasonably powerful ruby lasers.

One day, another Welsh physicist turned up. Called Dr Jones. Alvar Jones. Neither man had ever met another called Alvar.

When I was in Bangladesh I frequently heard news about a man with the same surname as mine (Cheyne) and similar initials. He was not a vet, some sort of social worker, and in seven years I never knowingly met him. We laughingly referred to him as "the other Dr.Cheyne." One afternoon towards the end of my stay there I walked through the gate of the High Commission and nearly missed a step because coming towards me was the spitting image of my father when he was in his fifties. Being frightfully British I just said 'Good afternoon' and walked on. When I walked out ten minutes later my driver, parked a little way down the road, said "I bet that was a surprise. What did you say to him?" "To whom?" "The other Dr. Cheyne of course." Weird!... and I never saw him again.

My wife's uncle, from Glasgow, keeps getting told by the local NHS that he does and then that he doesn't have cancer. In repeating cycles. His name is James Murphy.

We think that, by bizarre coincidence, there's another James Murphy, also from Glasgow, to whom the exact same thing is happening. Spooky, huh?

What are the chances? Apparently, in the Glaswegian NHS trust, quite high.........
