Mikes webinar entitled 'Recognising Heart Failure in the Dog' is now available on the IDEXX Learning Centre.

In this Webinar, Dr. Mike Martin will explain how to be alert to the presence of heart failure in dogs, following a review of left and right sided heart failure and how mitral valve disease and dilated cardiomyopathy lead to heart failure. The clinical findings that are indicative of heart failure (compared to respiratory disease) are explained. The aim is to get a point where you should have a good idea whether a dog that has presented with signs of exercise tolerance, breathlessness and coughing, has heart disease or respiratory disease.

Yup, but by the time I arrived home at 7.05pm it seemed impossible to join the webinar which had only just started. I'll log in and watch when it hits the archives, Graham.

Do you have an account on the IDEXX Learning Center? The link provided above won't work unless you do. When we started the webinars (over three years ago now!), we had a simple email mailing list--I remember adding your address. But, that was superseded by a more professional solution with the learning centre.

If you want to see how I did mine - not sure whether its good or bad but I'd keep the bullet points simple, pictures go a long way and speak slowly - not sure I achieved all those but I tried :) I think videos can be a bit temperamental via a streaming link but powerpoint animations seem to come out OK.

It is not too late to add multiple choice questions, but you'd need to get them to Jon some time today. Send them in the format:

q1. [to be placed after slide 13]

What would be an appropriate step for Millie

a. chest x-ray and ultrasound

b. do nothing

c. chest CT

d. any of the above

We can test the videos today to see how they would look down on various Internet connections.

It is going to be a great webinar and we are all looking forward to it :)

There's a mix or words, pictures, photos and movies. But maybe even more specific clinical cases might be good to.

Oh dear, I've got 5 movies, of dyspnoeic dogs. Idexx seem to prefer everything is uploaded to their webinar site, but so many speakers have problems with movies on laptops of others, I'm concerned. I'd prefer it al ran from my own laptop....hmmmm...

That sounds an interesting idea. I'll get that done for this one, but I'll keep that in mind and try to work out how to do that.

I would say to bear in mind that it is easy for our attention to wander when we are watching a computer screen rather than a person, especially if we are at home. So limited background information and straight to the juicy clinical bit. Case studies are good.

An important point is to speak clearly, not too fast, and to the microphone/camera. I find that in many webinars the speaker turns away to the diagram behind him or the model to one side and I cannot hear what he is saying even when he appears to be wearing a radio mike. Good luck.

I've not presented a webinar but have done live radio interviews and it was more stressful than standing up in front of an audience which I always find fun perhaps because I'm a bit of a showman. I would try and stick to a tried and tested formula with succinct powerpoint screens and as Frances suggests don't try anything fancy as it may not load but also don't get out of your comfort zone because as you say you can't interact with the audience to see how its going and its rather difficult to go back if you realise you've cocked up something. Somebody stuttering and stumbling on line when it doesn't come off is more embarrasing than if the audience is in front of you and can laugh it off - no pressure then! I guess once you've gained confidence then you may be tempted to try something a bit more adventurous next time. I would view an archived re-run of it to see how it appeared to the audience and learn from that although I have to say when I look at and listen to myself I cringe (perhaps the audience does as well and they're just being polite not booing me offf) and generally regret it. Maybe you should have a look at some of the other archived Idexx webinars for some more ideas. However from the participants point please try and answer the questions posted afterwards because some don't.

I'm following quite a lot of webinar, and infact I'm also registered for your webinar, so I look forward.

I actually love webinar, but obviously they can't be very practical.

My advise, is better to present clinical case with some pictures and explain what was the approach to the patient, the therapy

and the follow-up.

To involve people listening to you, you can put in place some poll or simple questions regarding what you said in the previous minutes,

so you can have and idea of what's going on, if people are listening, and if you're delivering well what's matter for you.

I hope these simple suggestions can help.

I can't pretend to be an expert Mike - but I delivered my first one earlier this year. I would suggest avoiding videos or complex animations - they might load well on your desktop, but you don't know the broad band width of all those listening in, and videos can load slowly for them or not at all. And from listening to a few, I think that preorganised multiple choice questions for the audience to select an answer, and/or spontaneous questions where you ask participants to 'raise a hand' at regular points in the presentation keep the audience engaged.
