I am a small animal vet who has been working in first opinion practice now for about 9 months.
To certificate pet passports I believe I need to do an LVI course? IS this right?
And can anyone please point me in teh direction of where I can

Re: How do I do an LVI course?
In my day it was a quick trip out to the VIC/MAFF Offices. A cup of coffee and a large book with instructions to read it. Then into a car and off to do a TT supervised (with careful clipping of area with scissors). I seem to remember the animals had no long hair so was excused clipping the rest. Back again to read the test.

They checked I could read an ear tag, knew about the brucellosis vaccine ear tags and could collect and label a blood sample and that was it!

Happy days!
Sounds a bit like my training except that I do not remember the cup of coffee! Further but similar training if you went on to 'Special Panel' (anthrax enquiry and such like). There were no OVs in those days and an LVI could sign most certificates, only a very few needed countersigning by a full-time MAFF officer.

OV training was the most boring day of my life.
Ditto. I think that the action that would make the single biggest improvement to my working life would be to resign my LVI status.

Re: How do I do an LVI course?

I just filled in the forms yesterday for one of our vets. Anyone can ring up or email, they email a form through and the vet and one of the partners need to sign it. It does need to be authorised by the practice though.

We have recently put one of our recent graduates through this training for both large and small animal work. The request for OV(LVI) appointment has to come from your employer so the first thing to do is to get your employer to phone DEFRA and request your appointment as an OV ( LVI) and to arrange the appropriate training. I don't think that you can request it yourself unless you are running a single handed practice. So speak to your employer first. It is not difficult or onerous training and is only half a day for purely small animal duties. Good luck!

Re: How do I do an LVI course?

It is DEFRA in Worcester you need to contact.
DEFRA run these courses, so I guess they would be the people to contact.
