Just wanting the opinion of the bosses out there on their attitude to employing forces wives/husbands. My husband is in the Navy and we are going through a period of change where I'm not sure where we'll end up living. I'm locuming at the moment

Re: Employing people from armed forces family

Hi Claire

I completely understand the difficulties you have with not knowing where your husband is going to be posted. My husband is in the army and it feels that the anxiety levels regarding when and where postings are going to be have risen significantly over the past months. Like Julie, I am the permanent base rather than moving from quarter to quarter, however it is my intention that this will not always be the case. When the time comes I am thinking that I will locum rather than take a permanent position thus giving me flexibility when another move comes along sooner than expected - which will no doubt happen!

I hope you find a good solution and your husband likes his next posting.

I hope you're suitably relaxed after the holiday. I'd love to move down..... I'm working on it. (Clare did a locum for us!!). I would agree that I would think it unlikely it would put a sensible employer off. Long-distance relationships are often the norm for the forces but are tough!

Best of luck - I am sure there are more than a few in government that regret the scrapping of the Harriers especially with the Libyan situation!

Re: Employing people from armed forces family

Thanks for the reply Julie. My husband was Joint Force Harrier and of course, they've scrapped them. I've tried the long distance thing - me being in one place and him coming home at the weekend but it didn't suit our relationship at all. We'll just have to wait to see where he's posted.

Re: Employing people from armed forces family

Hi Claire, I'm a forces wife- my husband is RN. I've never had a problem, but I've always had a permanent base. Not sure what branch your other half is in, but I've found that even when mine has been posted down to the other end of the country it's easier for him just to come home when he can and for me to stay put!

I can honestly say it has never affected my employer, other than if he wanted me to work extra shifts and other half was away, but that was mainly down to me having children and no childcare!

Hope your husband gets a permanent post soon- they are really messing people around at the moment, aren't they?

Re: Employing people from armed forces family

Thank you for your positive responses!

The forces influence brings with it a wonderful sense of discipline, responsibility and organisation which is so welcome in practice. That said, they don't live in Naval accomodation, and her husband does all the travelling while she has a permanent home base. So I guess much will depend on individual circumstances, but in principle, I hugely welcome forces background.

Re: Employing people from armed forces family

For myself, far from being put off, I'd welcome someone with a husband in the forces.
