I'm thinking of possibly moving to Spain/Europe to work after I qualify but was wondering if anyone had any experience in working in mainland Europe and also their equivalent of the RCVS. I've tried looking on the internet but cant find anything

Re: Working in Spain

Hello David, i am spanish and i work in Spain. Employee working as clinician in all Spain is very bad paid but exceptions, that is the reason why many Vets choose to open their own clinic, and this further aggravates the situation because fewer clientes go to each clinic. The other problem that aggravates even more is that we have in our geography 11 veterinary schools. Average wage for clinician are 12 payments of 1100- 1300 € working full-time. That is the reason why many spanish vets go to UK, better job opportunities (money and personal enrichment) (but some or many return by lifestyle, culture, family, diet, weather, etc). The exception of working in Spain with better salary would be for some specialist or certificate working for a hospital with several vets and lot of working, something that is not easy. If even with this scenario you want to try there are 4 places were you could input your job demand and your e-mail to get information before coming. In some places of Spain there are many foreign people where being english will be a good ponit (i can think in Alicante and places around).

http://www.avepa.org/index.php?option=com_adsmanager

http://avepa.org/

You have a jobs section in this one as well

Re: Working in Spain

Helen is right. The salaries are lower, particularly so for new graduates, the thing gets a bit better with experience, and it depends a lot on where in Spain are you thinking!

The equivalent to the RCVS in Spain is

http://www.colvet.es/

but bear in mind it is de-centralised and there are effectively arround 50 Colleges, one per province.

Also depending where you are thinking you may need different language skills (Galician, Catalan, Bask) as well as Castillian/Spanish

If you are thinking about an area is Spain in particular let me know and I may be able to comment.

Re: Working in Spain

Hi David,

I have a friend who's a Spanish vet working in Spain I'll try to get some info from him for you. What I do know is vet jobs are scarce and poorly paid in general. My friend went back to set up his own practice when his mum became ill but its been a slog for him. I do remember him telling me vets were paid substantially more in the UK. On the other hand, there isn't the out of hours obligation in Spain....

I'll try to get back to you soon with more concrete info.
