I have no clue really where to start

Re: Liability Insurance

All very good advice so far but ..... go compare; there are a few brokers that specialise in vets and do comprehensive policies.

I get quotes for all three of them and have changed over the years - double check it is like-for-like. Some give ridiculously high levels of business interruption etc that you may not need yet. They did me much cheaper buildings insurance as well, rather than going with someone like Directline.

It is all a bit of a minefield! I have organised VDS cover, and looked into illness cover, but the rest is a mystery to me

There is just so much to get done at the moment- when I'm not down there painting and laying flooring, I am on the phone (sometimes at the same time!) to a huge variety of people, so good to have a starting point with the insurance! I have an internal insuring lease only for the building, and I believe my landlord organises that and I pay the relevant proportion, but the other insurances I haven't got to grips with yet- will follow your suggestions in the morning.

Re: Liability Insurance

Join BVA, get Lloyd and Whyte, sorted.

It's usual to get a practice insurance package - which will include almost everything you need - and the broker will advise. For some reason you need to get pressure vessel (i.e. autoclave) insurance separately - I think.

Then you will need short-term sickness insurance - usually termed "absence" or "locum" insurance - believe me, you will bless it if you break a bit of yourself.

Make sure you get insurance for accountant's fees for tax investigation - usually a cheap add-on - you really need this.

Also get at least a bit of Permanent Health Insurance in case something happens and you are crippled for life.

VDS for professional indemnity of course.

Insurance always looks an awful lot of money when you write the cheques, but you can't afford to be without it.
