Really sad and definitely one where I would like to see someone using the new Welfare laws

Re: Morbidly obese collie

My wife was involved in the introduction of a pilot program for childhood obesity in the Aberdeenshire area. This was a free program (NB FREE program) which would help with the management of childhood obesity. Following a number of screening criteria the parents would be offered the opportunity to take part in an 8 week program. Based upon national statistics it was expected that about 2000 families would be eligable. The program was abandoned when only 2 showed any interest.

This is about people and their children. Don't feel too bad when you cannot get people to take an interest in their dog's weight.

Re: Morbidly obese collie

I think we need to try and educate the public more rather than rely on prosecutions, except in extreme cases. I tend to try and read the riot act, warn of pending diseases. and try and enrol them on some form of weight management program or clinic.

That said, a large proportion of the UK human population are no strangers to the sweet trolley, and are incapable of managing their own weight, fitness and diet and that of their children, so it would seem highly unlikely they would do it for a pet ??

Re: Morbidly obese collie

There's video on the BBC website too. Shocking to say the least.

Although no mention of any move to prosecute other than the owner is very ill and in hospital, so I am assuming confiscation of the dog and trying to get her back to health is the priority. Doesn't ever seem like these cases get pushed to prosecution though - both here and abroad.
