Violins not needed, not moaning. It was ok for a first position, poor area and busy (i.e would get to do most things rather than the modern trend of referring anything more taxing than a cat spey) so a good place to cut my teeth. I wouldn't do the OOH again though, the biggest improvement was an OOH clinic setting up in the area. And it was good fun most of the time with a great bunch of colleagues.

I think most new grads in small animal practice get a package around 30k. there will always be some getting more or less but that seems the average at present.

in 1996 I was in an 80% large animal practice as a new grad with 1 in 2 OOH rota, 1 in 2 weekends and 3 weeks holiday/year, for 13K + house and car, and it was *very* busy!

Where did you get a first job?

My first job, 1997, £18000 plus a car, (had to pay my own house), now equivalent to £24840.

hmmm mine works out at 5,000 in 1982 +flat and car- or 13,000 today - 5000 in those days seemed like riches - 13,000 today doesnt go very far.!!!

In 1979 I was on 4K +flat n car. But by 1982 I was on 7.5K + flat n car. Prob worth around 9.5K total then. I recall that a first cons fee was then £5 and a DHLP booster 15.00 and bitch spay 40.00 all ex VAT. So whilst on this basis 3y qualified VS salary has risen 3-4 fold, cons fees are up 5 fold, but neuters only 3 fold and vaxes just double. Conclusion? Dunno really!

I feel for new grads coming through with the appalling levels of debt some must have. I had a final year student seeing practice last year with a £70k overdraft in addition to student loans etc - she's almost snookered before she starts her professional career, buys a house, starts a family, buys a car etc - with repayments likely to be £600-£700/month.

Mark's right because inflation and puechasing power are different things-housing costs, despite recent fall have usually risen far faster than anything else-and for that reason were taken out of the calculations in the late 80s.This was fair enough when calculating benefit rises, as those on benefits have either paid off their mortgages (OAPs ) or are having rent paid as housing benefit-but most veterinary grads will be eventually hoping to buy their own property

In 1977 I got a salary of £4000 and a car.......a car!! I would have worked for food and shelter for a car of my own....and all the petrol I could burn in the Chrysler Avenger! And I got to raz about the beautiful countryside lambing sheep, calving cows etc, etc....all in brilliant sunshine, with ....oh hold on.

In todays money that is £21,200 which seems like a lot. I didn't even ask how many nights or weekends on duty that entailed....oh dear....

Not that I'm any opponent of throwing numbers around, but has anyone compared this to actual prices? Numbers mean very little without comparison to actual purchasing power...inflation's a lovely bogeyman that everyone loves to misunderstand, isn't it?

(Wages and prices never, or hardly ever rise at the same rate - adjusted for inflation, what was the cost of living when you graduated? Suddenly it's not quite so easy to talk about how little you made...)

13500 plus house and car in 1996, which would be equivalent today of 19000.
