We have recently fallen victim to a charity publishing scam and narrowly missed being caught a second time.
Briefly, a company sent us an invoice for an advert ordered with them, which was to placed in a community care magazine to be distributed

Re: Charity Publishing Scams - alert

Thank you all for your feedback, my practice manager is a bit happier now!

Re: Charity Publishing Scams - alert

[quote user="Niall Taylor"]

They call us every year but we're wise now. Always a scouser, very cheery, 'How are you today' etc etc. Always a connection with the police/ambulance service/fire service - allegedly.

New angles;

1) Will phone and try to con admin staff/practice manager into 'confirming' the till roll/visa machine roll order; said kit arrives from CANADA at huge cost. Don't pay them, they're persistant but its fun winding them up.

2) Phone scam, asian voice, midlands, continually reminding me that conversation is being recorded and trying to get me to agree to a 'free trial offer' on a new rental package. Hang up when you state emphatically that you won't make any decision without seeing their proposal in writing.

And so it goes.

Use these calls as free therapy. Tell the person at the other end of the phone all your problems, just keep them on the phone for as long as you can. Someone has written a book about the long email conversations he has had with a Nigerian gentleman trying to give him lots of money! It was on Radio 4. Brilliant!

Re: Charity Publishing Scams - alert

A previous practice I worked at (corporate) got the till roll scam. Unfortunately several branches fell foul as once they had a name they considered it an order (one reason not to answer the phone with "you're speaking to.."). I think head office took them to court in the end.

But they still tried it on the next year!!!

Re: Charity Publishing Scams - alert

They call us every year but we're wise now. There's one round here, every year, tries to get you to "sponsor" in a non-existent public service schools programme. For several years they made out they were calling on behalf of the Fire Service. In 2010, they made out it was the Police! One has to admire their cheek, if nothing else.

If they are not prepared to put their offer in writing in the post, it's a scam. Sometimes it's a scam even if they do put it in the post.

Re: Charity Publishing Scams - alert

Thank you for this!
