I wish RCVS would-but they say they can only regulate veterinary surgeons-although the Farriers Registration Council are far more pro-active in detecting and prosecuting acts of illegal farriery. The police have other priorities, so are too overstretched to take it on

Best hope would be one of these illegal practitioners setting up in that village in Cardiganshire, where some years ago, there wasn't a single reported crime in a whole year-the local bobby might be so bored he would be glad to take it on-and prove to his superiors that he was actually doing SOMETHING

Funnily enough, I agree with Big J, Hannah. Make sure it's recorded.
I wonder if the breeder is aware she could land up in the magistrates court-as she is definitely commiting a criminal offence if not on the register- diagnosing non-disease-when it is only VETERINARY SURGEONS who have been allowed to do so since 1948-and is acting unethically if qualified It makes me sickthat no-one is prepared to rigidly enforce the VSA

But who goes about taking these issues to court or wherever they need to go? Stuff like this happens ALL the time, and similar issues with illegal supply of POMV's, online pharmacies, friends giving friends drugs they had for their animal etc. etc. etc. Can we realistically take on the costs of taking them to court? I would if I could A) afford to b) knew where to go to and/or c) had the time to spare after working as a general practice vet. Makes me pretty grumpy too, but I don't know if we can really pursue any of these things to a level that would make a difference...

Re: a little moan

I wonder if the breeder is aware she could land up in the magistrates court-as she is definitely commiting a criminal offence if not on the register- diagnosing non-disease-when it is only VETERINARY SURGEONS who have been allowed to do so since 1948-and is acting unethically if qualified It makes me sickthat no-one is prepared to rigidly enforce the VSA

I had one just last week. It was a dog who suddenly went off his legs and had neck pain. I spent at least 45mins talking to the couple about the options. stating that disc disease was the most likely cause but couldn't rule out other things. Offered the options of referral for full work up, xrays with us which may show the problem or may not, or trial treatment. The guy wanted to know exactly what it was and was favouring referral but the woman didn't want to put him thru anything. I phoned the referral practice, found out costs etc and tried to give them all the information about the different options. The dog wasn't insured but the owners seemed to think that they could afford the costs if necessary. In the end they decided they wanted to go home and think about for an hour and discuss between the 2 of them to make a decission. 2 hrs later I phoned them to ask if they'd decided. They then said they'd been to see their horse vet who said it was definately a prolapsed disc and had given him pain relief to see how he responded. They hadn't even bothered to tell me.

Re: a little moan

Dear Ms Chilton,
