I have thought for a long time that the NHS represents very poor value for money. It costs the taxpayer roughly £1750 per person per year, and only delivers a slow, often poor service, with many areas (eyecare, dentistry) already/being privatised through the back door.

Compare my brother in the US who pays about £1200 a year in insurance premiums. This includes all healthcare, all dentistry, annual eyecheck and annual well-man clinic with basic bloods, ecg, screening for heart and prostate disease. The £1200 is tax deductible, and overall taxation is about half of what we pay.

Nope. Well, I don't do quotes but of course I do estimates: and the estimate is "so much plus VAT", and then if necessary "so you will need to pay so much altogether." When they come to pay at the desk, my lady asks them for " so much plus VAT........ that's so much altogether please." Not remotely dishonest and nobody has ever suggested so. Occasionally in the past people have assumed I will not charge VAT if they pay cash and I have to politely put them straight.

One chav yesterday backed into a parked car that one of the practice's student nurses was sitting in. When she got out to inspect the damage, chav's girlfriend slapped the nurse for "not moving out of the way" when she saw their car coming. (as stated above, nurse was in a parked car. )

Re: Having a shakey day today!

Another in the same boat-VAT is the killer-my theory is that if it was abolished, the boost to the economy would create so many new jobs-and if at the same time social security was drastically cut, so it no longer paid people tobe idle, then we could solve the unemployment/bad back problem with no bother-especially if employers were given the right to sack the ones that didn't pull their weight I'm totally sick of paying for layabouts-between VAT, my own Income tax, and nurses PAYE the government takes more out of the business than I do

Pushed my hand through a plasterboard wall because a major gutter was blocked at the weekend by a sign belonging to the nearby Indian Restaurant and water poured down the wall making a solid looking wall as strong as paper. VAT paid earlier in month, income tax set up for next week.

Paying tax is only OK if you have the money in the bank.

Now I have bl**dy toothache!

Who would be a practice owner in January?

(Only discuss if sympathetic please)

Re: Having a shakey day today!

I'm having a quiet day hence lots of posts today but my bad day was yesterday. Two totally unreasonable clients one refused to pay (even more unreasonable than usual), also posted up my tax payment on BACS for next week. VAT also due, just paid £10K to have the roof fixed, got to find £15K to pay the shortfall on my surgery mortgage which is due for re-payment next month, daughter just advised she wants to go back to uni. to do another course so another 2 years fees/costs to fund and wife just retired so loss of £60K per annum income to the household. Looks like my retirement is delayed a bit longer!!

Re: Having a shakey day today!

Bob as they say the only two certainties in life are taxes and death and yes you get sympathy for both !
