If we had suffered this problem we would have been on the phone to our neighbouring practice to warn them as they use the same system as we do. I am , however the boss so it is a decision for me to make!

If it is not your practice then anon is probably completely appropriate especially as this profession is great for gossips!

I was very surprised (and amused) to hear that my practice was closing down. They even knew the date!

We were so busy that day we 'forgot' to close and two years on we are still here!

The reason I posted anonymously is that I was not sure that my employer would want it widely known. Some time ago you raised this as an issue and something you suggested we considered before posting. Hence I used anon. I could have used my own log in and posted a wishy washy please check your security post but I would have been able to supply fewer details. It is still necessary to have a proper back up. Off site is certainly far better and we have two off site copies of all our data. The unfortunate situation where a virus got into our system appeared to have affected our back ups as well, so these were of no use.

What's the point of a back up if it's on the same system? Surely it should be on a separate unconnected disk that is updated every couple of days and stored off the premises... It would still be very inconvenient to have to de-virus the computers, but at least it wouldn't mean loss of info...

We had a similar problem around a year ago when a virus managed to get onto our server. One of the IT techs had left and open internet connection on one of our computers in xray. This was a computer that shouldn't have been left online so didn't normally have any anti-viral and firewall software on it. It would seem that the virus got onto this computer then onto the server from there. Unfortunately I had to spend a couple of days running antiviral software on all the practice computers including the server (took ages). Fortunately no clinical info was lost. Learnt an important lesson that day.

That pretty much sucks big time. Defo contact the police on this one - they may well refer to you to someone much higher up.

Unfortunately is doesn't just happen to small businesses - the Russian hackers are becoming particularly adept at this sort of internet terrorism as several global firms and indeed one government found out a few years ago.

I would like to say I have faith in Jupiter's security system, but then again (see an earlier thread posted by my boss)the numerous glitches we seem to suffer following their downgrades do not exactly fill me with confidence.

We got a virus last year which disrupted things for a couple of weeks but nothing permanent. Made us look again too......
