Meanwhile I waved goodbye on the 23rd to 1200 of the lambs that have been plagueing my 'festive' season and breathed a sigh of relief. Set off on the 24th for the 6 hour drive to my parents' in Scotland only to be rung by DEFRA who apparently didn't receive my faxed TRACES-CONF (or it had been put on the wrong desk and no-one could find it ). No, I couldn't re-fax it as I was somewhere near Berwick in a monumental A1 traffic jam and the documents were locked in my office at home 3 hours away.

The following day I unwrapped a 'Sheep 2011' diary from my mother who failed to understand my complete lack of appreciation.

And on Boxing Day, in a similar spot on the A1 near Berwick, this time going southbound, the agent for the sheep exports rang to let me know that 1100 more were going to France the following day necessitating a 4.30am wake up call for me and 6 hours of tagging, counting and checking sheep that the farmer should have sorted out in advance of my visit as he has just paid me £1.53/minute for 6 hours for a job which could have been done by someone on minimum wage. On the other hand perhaps he won't be paying me at all because as I drove off his property I put a call in to DEFRA suggesting they take a closer look at his husbandry standards....

Bah humbug, and if I never see another sheep again it will be too soon

No the turkey was dead.

It was my temperature that was 102F.

I had the christmas on call. Sick as hell, deffo not enjoyable. Not man flu…albeit this started as one.

Does the common cold cause a fever? I enjoy my bouts of 'man-flu' and wallow in self-pity whilst accepting the sympathy and toddies. This was not enjoyable so cannot by definition be man-flu!

You want to be careful that the cold doesn't deteriorate into full blown man-'flu. The only known cure is to tell people how ill you are frequently. Frequent mopping of brow by wife and intake of hot toddies has been clinically shown to speed recovery.

I cooked the turkey whilst running a fever of 102F. Quite a bizarre experience. I often cook feeling light-headed but this is usually alcohol induced. This time it was alcohol-free!

This must be the first Christmas that I have ended up weighing less than before it started!

Meanwhile, here at the new VetSurgeon Towers, the Guthries were all struck down with HN51 (otherwise known as 'a cold') this Christmas. Seems we caught the strain which affects middle-aged people far worse than children. Youngest daughter just had a snotty nose for a day or two, whereas parents suffered full blown hypochondriatis extremis. Bah humbug.

Cat with horrible ulceration of 2/3rds of the cornea. Client phoned on 18th Dec to let us know the cat had a bad eye. Told to have it seen ASAP but could not bring in for 3 days! Phoned to let us know it was much better so cancelled that appointment only to reappear with aforementioned bad eye on Xmas eve. No bloody sense at all!

Also we closed Xmas eve at 12.30 but I was on call until 4pm. Phoned at 2pm by owner of ill animal. Told to come straight down and as they live 10 minutes away I was a bit pi**ed off to be still waiting 50 minutes later. I phoned to find out where they had got to only to be told that they had gone home to deal with some 'crisis'.

Don't you just love em!

However I seem to be cursed this Christmas! Today received from my wonderful hubby, another copy of a book that I bought myself and read last month, and a new digital camera with a fatal flaw, ie it won't turn on! Happy days, at least it's been a White Christmas !

Thankfully not Michael, no damage to our side other than lack Of power meaning I have had to cancel all Monday's appointments as it will not be fixed until late in the day I suspect. Was the main fuse board that was alight due to an electric fault. I am just extremely grateful it happened when the store was occupied, as a few hours later and the whole store would be ashes, and I would not have a surgery. Thankful that the staff all acted very quickly to get all the customers and animals out and no one was hurt. Very grateful we had undertaken a recent fire drill which meant no-one panicked.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to build up Christmas spirit this year too.
