How weird! Not sure it should breed though, even if it now can!

If so, how could she have pups as she might be XXY and therefore infertile? Impressed they picked up her 2 sets of sex organs via an Xray though... :/

Re: Weird!

We had an hermaphrodite dog (springer spaniel) in a couple of months ago - picked up during a consult for cystitis when I noticed it had a 10cm mucosa-covered bone poking out of her vulva (owner thought this was normal)!! Was booked in for exlap to neuter - cryptorchid testis, ovaries and a deformed uterus were removed. We couldn't think of any way to remove the pseudopenis and as it doesn't bother the dog or owner it still remains. We wouldn't have even considered anything other than complete sterilisation for this dog, whatever anatomy was found. Anrich often does things differently though.

Re: Weird!

I thought that true hermaphrodites generally had ovotesties although one ovary and one testis can occur etc. However would you be confident which one is which unless the testis had descended as an intra-abdominal testis is likely atrophic ? Also I would doubt it it would go on to have a normally reproductive cycle even if not - I would think that the uterus would be vestigial with the influence of androgens? All sounds a bit suspect to me. Also I would also not recommend breading at all from this animal!

I presume therefore it had one testicle so the heroic surgery was a partial castrate - not really sex change surgery - good old Daily Mail

Re: Weird!

Must be true, it's in the daily mail?

Headline = Hermaphrodite dog goes under the knife to become 'female' in rare sex change operation

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1338819/Hermaphrodite-dog-goes-knife-female-rare-sex-change-operation.html#ixzz18IfwcpSR

If it were truly a "true" hermaphrodite it would be both sexes, i.e have both male and female tissue. therefore how could it have "sex change" operation?

Were both testes and penis removed?

was the condition confirmed by histology of ovaries/testes/ovotestes?

would any vet worth their salt remove only part of the reproductive organs in genetically abnormal animal?

Re: Weird!

Interesting, Cat.

'The animal came in for a routine check-up and after we did X-Rays, we found it had both male and female sexual organs"

I know a lass who works at that practice, I may have a little dig and see if I can find any more out.
