Today's casualties:

my TB guns which froze up completely and I could only keep them working by dipping them in a flask of hot water every few cows.

Had to go out today to shoot some stirks trapped under a collapsed roof. It looked like TV news pictures of an earthquake aftermath. I took some pics on my phone but have no way of getting them onto the computer sadly. We couldn't decide whether it was safe to enter the remains of the shed to shoot them or not as the remainder of the beams were likely to go too. In the end I darted in and did it - they made me take out some hefty life insurance with my mortgage! I forgot to factor in the retort of the gun though and there was a bit of movement overhead when that went off so I got out pronto.

Wow Malcolm that does out our whingeing in the South East into perspective! We have had our share of snow and problems but not to the extremes you describe. We did have -11 one night but overall it has been a relatively mild -5 to -6. Trains didn't run all last week and we couldn't get the car out for a few days but overall we have coped with the disruptions.

Re: Freezing Problems

Would you believe a chicken can freeze to the ground?
C'mon Bob - we'd love to see you in lycra!

Re: Freezing Problems

At the risk of incurring more ire from Bob - have you seen L'Eroica? Just the ticket I would think for a man who rides an Orange Vit T! I'm hoping to take it on in 2012 - just need to find a suitable bike!

I do marathon type rides (Merida series etc) mutli day stage races (TransWales, Sani2C) and Gorrick type short distance races, as well as road bike sportives (160-190K) including two Etapes and the Marmotte - and am mediocre at all of them! I AM good at finishing what I started. My wife and I did win the mixed class category at this year's TransWales - but that's cause she's well 'ard ;-) To be fair I did hold up my end of the team I think!

I am on STW - but very seldom get on there, spend more time at Bikeradar though STW is very good for specific questiosn, especially the racing type. I just find their format very non-user-friendly.

I didn't know there was a cyclists group on here. Arlo, I think we need a cycling sub-forum, if you wouldn't mind terribly.

Last Wednesday I tried getting to my CPD about 100 miles away, and managed 750 yards before getting stuck in my Subaru. So much for reaching the main roads. My friend who helped rescue me then managed to get stuck in his Land Rover. After about two and a half hours I eventually reached home again.

Not to be thwarted, on Thursday, I did manage the seven and a half miles to work on my mountain bike - the joy of vehicle-less roads, snow-covered or not! My Vitamin T laughs in the face of drifts!

On the subject of Etapes, I've done two, plus the Raid Pyreneen which is like four and a half Etapes on the trot. It's not against the clock in the same way as an Etape - unless you go with your club mates, when it most definitely is, and it is just as tough at 105 to 115 miles per day, with eleven thousand metres of climbing mountain passes on the way.

There is very little difference solo or team in terms of effort with their new format - it really just increases the number of categories. It is great fun and I highly recommend it. Only downside can be the weather which in 2008 was simply dire.
