Thanks guys for the collie replies my student will be happy after several cases on her clinical rotation here I've made her paranoid about lungworm.

I have used Advocate on all my collies (5 in total) for the last 3 years and never had a problem.

advocate is safe even for collies with the MDR1 gene defect as long as you stick closely to the dosing guidelines. i wouldn't give a 25kg collie a whole 25-40kg pipette, would probably err on the side of caution and go with the 10-25kg pipette.

I've used advocate on a collie cross with no problems; o uses it monthly as the dog had a very nasty case of hookworm (the little fellas were poking their heads out of the mucosa and waving at me through the endoscope!)

It's cleared up beautifully, the dog probably no longer needs the advocate but the owner's worried sick about the dog possibly relapsing. (Was treated at another vet's last year for same thing, and it came back.)

I figure the monthly advocate is the lesser of these two evils, so to speak, and i've had no side effects reported.

Several products commonly used (typically the spot on flea preps) contain these volatile excipients that will dissolve plastics.

They can also damage dyed fabrics and varnishes/polishes on furniture and some datasheets carry warnings to this effect. So worth warning owners before the cat shakes off that recently applied spot on product onto the Queen Anne table / family heirloom!

Example warning found on datasheets:

The product may have adverse effects on painted, varnished or other household surfaces or furnishings.

Promeris makes a mess of plastic collars - we have always warned owners that it affects plastics!!!

Sometimes common sense doesn't seem that common. Irregardless that the Advocate might melt the collar, if its leaching onto the collar it 'aint going into the pet! I always tell clients to take the collar off for the latter reason. On a more pragmatic note: does anyone have experience of using Advocate on collies? There's some warnings in the data sheets that care is required but one of my students is worried about putting it on her collie.

From the Advocate data sheet

Cats and Ferrets

Part the fur on the animals neck at the base of the skull until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze the pipette firmly several times to empty its contents directly onto the skin. Application at the base of the skull will minimise the opportunity for the animal to lick the product.

And from the Frontline Cat data sheet

Part the coat on the back of the animal at the base of the neck in front of the shoulder blades until the skin is visible.

Why are you all putting the spot on so far forwards? I instruct owners to do it between the shoulder blades.

Heather - I do tell people to leave it a few days if using FL and Profender.

As a slight aside Eprinex will strip cured paint of parlour walls if you miss! No idea what it does to plastic!

Well, you learn something new every day.....

Have never come across this, but will pass this info onto our receptionists so they can warn people as they hand it out. I have seen a couple of cases of nasty skin irritation seemingly related to owners putting both frontline and profender on the same spot, so have taken to advising people to leave a week or so between applications. Anyone else seen this?

yup, we had one client who put it on and then put dog in footwell of passenger seat in car, dog obviously leant up against the glovebox and it melted the plastic on the glovebox. client was erm rather unhappy!

it did take the varnish off my dog's leather collar so i do try to warn owners now if i give it out or apply it

I once applied Frontline spot-on to a Westie wearing one of those leather collars with a tartan pattern on it. The owner came running back in two minutes later screaming that the dog was bleeding to death - it actually did look like it! - the red pigment on the collar had dissolved and run all over its neck and shoulders.

I've been told by an owner that Advocate melted plastic-don't know what sort of plastic. Another owner spilt some ona leather sofa, which was both bleached, and blistered.She said that if the cow had been alive it would have said "ouch !!!!!!!!!!!"

Worrying in a high Angiostrongylus area-I wonder if it's justification for breaching the cascade ???????????
