We get a letter each year from the company who removes our waste. They claim we need to pay an annual registration fess (due to recent regs). Is this correct?
...... there's a company called (well, never mind, but they are well known and outwardly respectable) who used to supply (well, we got them from our wholesaler) our DOOP bins and therefore collect them from time to time. Now my DOOP is taken by my cremation company, with no hassle and at lower cost.

I always thought that DOOP collected the bins until I realised it was company called PHS (not the same by any chance Evelyn?) which did offer to register on my behalf for £50 but there was no strongarm tactics. Their paperwork does seem a lot less onerous and the charges less than CPC I have to say - is that significant?

Re: Hazardous Waste Regs
don't allow your clinical waste collector to (generously!) register on your behalf - they will probably charge a lot more.
Seconded!

Also watch out for actual scams.

This one was not exactly scam but was extremely annoying....... there's a company called (well, never mind, but they are well known and outwardly respectable) who used to supply (well, we got them from our wholesaler) our DOOP bins and therefore collect them from time to time. They kept sending us letters saying they would register on our behalf (for a lot more than £18) unless we told them not to, which I ignored at first as being inertia selling. Then I told 'em I did not want their registration service, at that time or at any time in the future. Then they started sending demands for money because they had registered us anyway. Eventually they sent a grudging letter that they would "waive" the charge, just this once. The next year, damn me, they tried the same trick again, although I had ceased to use their DOOP bin. That went to threats from solicitors and I had to make counter-threats before they finally backed down. Believe it or not, they tried it again the next year.

Now my DOOP is taken by my cremation company, with no hassle and at lower cost.

Re: Hazardous Waste Regs

You have to register regardless and get an exemption if you're below the limit. As previously mentioned the limit is 500kg and hazardous waste is a bit difficult to refine but is surprisingly little of your clinical waste, however it does includes x-ray chemicals which can add up quickly. Its a very quick and easy procedure on-line on the environment agency web-site and only costs £18 so IMO its not worth fretting over whether you'll go over the limit and don't allow your clinical waste collector to (generously!) register on your behalf - they will probably charge a lot more.

Re: Hazardous Waste Regs

Depends how much you produce:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/waste/32198.aspx

Re: Hazardous Waste Regs

We used to register but the weight of true hazardous waste we produce is surprisingly small. Below a certain level (500Kg I think) you do not need to register or pay each year.

We classify waste as hazardous - sharps and limited 'wet' waste that potentially could be a direct threat to humans or animals. There is very little of this as most gets classified as offensive. You would not want to stick your hand in it but the level of risk is comparable to kitchen waste at home. A lot of the waste produced by veterinary practices is of low risk - no worse than those chicken portions that have sat too long in the fridge.

Our waste companies seem OK with this.

We had a visit from the environment agency inspector who started spouting the party line but he went quiet when I criticised the agency for breaking a system that was not broke. Now our 'yucky' waste goes for deep landfill whereas previously it was all ceremonially cremated!!!

Just because it is yucky does not make it hazardous! No comments at this point about my wife's cooking!!
