She has got that sort of reputation locally but on this occasion she expected a vet to be quite a heavy drinker! Perhaps should stop posting as every comment I write seems to have a double meaning!

Just taken out a mortgage to buy a bottle of the cask strength (61.6%). I have disposed of the receipt so my wife will not find out. Did not taste it last night as I had a bottle of Beaujolais Nouveaux to try - not really worth the effort in the end but quite quaff-able.

I had a medical for life insurance a few years ago and the nurse did not believe me when I told her how much I drink. She expected much more!!! Quality not quantity!

Nothing wrong with it, a very nice malt - got mine from Waitrose so had to be better than a bottle from the Co-op!

Local Co-Op had Jura original 10 year old for about £17 per bottle :) Bought 2 - yes I know its not "special" but cost-effective for a frequent tipple ;)

I note that in this discourse on Islay malts nobody has yet mentioned either of those malts whose names start with a "B" and then get very difficult to spell or pronounce. The health conscious amongst you will appreciate the protective effect of taking a drink whose name you will lose the ability to utter long before dangerous levels of inebriation have been achieved.

Not true - this is a fallacy, probably originating from the distilleries to encourage excess consumption thereby allowing vets to fall foul of the not so sympathetic health protocol introduced by the RCVS.

I try to limit my consumption of extra strong cider and lager to two six packs an evening!

Just in case, I would like to point out to them that a bottle of the finest will last me for years but when I do occasionally indulge myself I prefer a small glass of a good single malt rather than a tumbler full of rat's p...!

The issue here goes beyond just ego's and work and professional ethic. As vets we have specialist knowledge which clients do not have - clients have to take a huge amount of what we say and do on trust. Without that trust we can't operate. That trust is partly built by the individual vet with his or her own clients but is also developed by the profession as a whole. If we don't behave ethically and professioanlly, if we resort to tradesmen like tactics then we will be regarded in exactly that light - as tradesmen and not professionals. Our working lives will become increasingly more difficult.

Oh - and I am nowhere near retirement but I do like a good whisky! Preferably an Islay.
