Latterly there have been sites like this where there is no editorial policy as such, yet vets seem to be selective about what is discussed.

The Vet Record seems to be very good (as it always has) at publishing the obscure. It is extremely helpful if you are working with buffalo and yak's but can be very light on useful day-to-day stuff.
Having some sub-editorial duties with a similar medical journal I sympathise with the difficulties of the VR. These journals can publish only what they receive in the way of peer-reviewed articles of a particular standard and if authors submit only articles on the difficulties of making yak butter at high altitude the only alternative is to commission (i.e. pay for) more popular articles. To do that on a weekly basis becomes expensive even if suitable authors can be found.
In Practice - love it - my level all the time
I agree, although it is usually above my level these days! It is frequently usefully informative in a very readable way. I wonder whether they commission some of the articles or whether authors do it for the love of seeing their name and work in print.

As Bob has said the Vet Record rarely fails to amaze me with it's choice of what to put in there....diseases of fresh water snails and the pathophysiology of hair loss in the spiney toed anteater ( if there is such a thing) hardly make for a worthwhile read when you're a busy day/night time practicioner looking to actually gain something from spending your lunch hour reading it.

The case based discussions on here are excellent when it comes to actually finding out whats going on out there and what people are doing at different levels....and some scientific articles/papers to back up these developments/treatment protocols would be excellent.

Re: Reality

The Vet Record seems to be very good (as it always has) at publishing the obscure.
JSAP frightens me to death because it shows me how little I know!! Much of the stuff in there I didn't even know I didn't know!!!

In Practice - love it - my level all the time (often shows me what I should be doing)!

Vet Times - veterinary gossip and they do seem to be happy to allow the boat to be rocked a bit. It is the closest thing to a real newspaper.

On-line (such as here) if I need help now, want an argument or want to check that other people can be as petty as me!!! It shows me I am not the only vet in the world (a single man practice can feel an isolated place).

Great to try anything new - fortunately this is a place where we can be fairly honest.

This was sort of where I was heading with the Abstracts, Research and Short Communications wiki. But I think with hindsight I should be going in a less clinical direction with the sort of content that members may wish to contribute. I'm certainly happy to give it a go.
Could it not fall into one of the 'Publish' categories? There is no guarantee that anyone would read it of course.
I don't think it quite fits anything that is there at the moment.

As regards people reading it ... If someone publishes an interesting, thought-provoking article, I will highlight in the monthly newsletter.

The key, in my experience, is to be as succinct as possible with essays for online publication, though the necessity for that will decrease as people consume more and more electronic media on portable devices (ie in the comfort of an armchair).

Martin, if you'd like me to set this up, I need to give the section a very clear title / description, so that members know EXACTLY what they may publish.

Re: Reality
