Many thanks for the response! I'm still going next year; i prefer saturdays but the london vet show is in my opinion clearly worth an extra day off.

Ackshly sir, I was absent with leave. Then we packed up and went (like many other stands) at 4.40 p.m. cos we had trains to catch and it was obvious no-one was going to come to see us after that time (except you of course! )

We didn't do too badly considering we had possibly the rottenest stand site of the show. One of our trade friends said we we'd been given Morgue Corner

Well of course they do, because on the second day they are thinking about getting home.I'd risk a small wager that when Friday is the second day people stay a shorter time.

Well, the RCVS website says:

'Broadly speaking, any activities you undertake in order to further your professional competence as part of a planned development programme can be counted towards your CPD. You do not have to participate in 35 hours of face to face learning.'

In my book anything that genuinely enhances your knowledge and working practices could be counted. Yes - I would say speaking to reps can be a valuable source of information - particularly with new products. Sometimes reps will give a formal presentation to the vets and nurses in the practice and I would say that's fine to count . Of course if they are just chatting about old products and you don't learn anything new that would be a negative. Just record it on your card in case the College ever asks to see it... (or PSS inspector) !

Friday lectures run from 0900-1750 = 8hrs 50 min; Sat lectures 0830-1650 = 8 hr 20 mins. Any time not in lectures, but diligently spent in the trade exhibition is also quite justified to claim as CPD in my opinion.

A valid point, but as I didn't attend Friday due to work committments and my certificate states 14 hrs I figure claiming 17 may be taking the piss! Incidentally Bob do you claim time spend with sales reps in practice for CPD? I have a colleague who does, I claim some but only if I could genuinely prove it changed the way I work.

PS I won't be attending next year if it is Thursday and Friday.

Hi there, I have been looking through the posts and thought that it worth while responding on the subject of our move to Thursday and Friday. We did extensive research last year which showed that over half of our delegates would prefer a move away from a weekend conference with a significant portion showing no preference. As the new kids on the block we were hesitate to make a change like this for our second year. However now that research has been backed up by 2 years of experience and our registration data (which is the clearest sign of peoples preferences) show we get better attendance on a Friday than a Saturday, and those same delegates stay in the event longer on a Friday than a Saturday.

Absolutely - especially if you booked early - I got the 2 days for £100 + VAT and logged up 17 hours of CPD, which is nearly half the annual minimum RCVS requirement. I'm not quite clear who is acually behind the London Vet Show - 'Closer Still Media' +/- RVC, ? - but presumably who ever it is comes out making a profit. Does make you wonder if some other CPD is not over-priced.

I found the gaps between lectures irritating but it did give me time to get around the commercial exhibition more easily which I had deduced was the idea. Lectures were overall good, even on subjects I thought I was an expert on I learned a few new things. Whoever summed up after the last lecture mentioned the Thurs/Fri thing for next year then quickly corrected himself and said Fri/Sat again so I'm confused. I only went Saturday anyway as I couldn't get a locum for Friday so I probably won't go next year if it is in the week only. Still I got a new pair of skis from the Ski show next door, much more interesting than veterinary science! Anyone want to hear about them?

I didn't make it in the end (we've had a few rough days with my daughter's epilepsy here at HQ). Hopefully when we move back across the Styx later in the year, it'll make it easier for me to get out a bit, and those of you that I promised a drink will be able to collect next year, either at LVS or BSAVA.

Definitely going next year. I think fri-sat is a better fit than thu-fri, but that's mainly because i have days of cpd, not budget for cpd. So fri-sat conference means i only use 1 day, thu-fri means 2 days off.

Outstanding value for money, overall. The signage needs work, I got lost a bit. Content was very very good. Four stars out of five. (party organization wasn't very good.)

Overall I enjoyed it.

I think the timing benefited the trade stands part. Stall holders who I talked to liked that the hall wasn't fluctuating between jam packed and dead quiet. For me there weren't too many that I wanted to go to that clashed completely, it was just that one was always starting at the exact same time as the previous on ended. Sprinting straight from one to another and getting my brain to switch subjects that quickly was mentally exhausting.

Content wise I think it was pretty good. I went to a few duff lectures last year and I would say some were better than others this year too but I think that was based on whether they were pitching at my level or not as opposed to bad speakers.

I hadn't heard about the Thurs/Fri for next year. I'd probably still go ( so long as the price stays low as I think it's main selling point is being such good value) but I think it will probably put some people off.

Actually the Ski Show doesn't close until 8pm so time afterwards. Now there's a good venue for a vetsurgeon.org meeting - at an apres-ski bar.

REALLY, now there is a dilemma. The lecturers are under pressure to perform otherwise there may be one less in the hall. (Just as long as I can still collect my certificate of attendance for the old CPD records)

Arlo will be the one with the begging bowl in preparation for the house move. Also stress lines on face, shaking hands, bags under eyes etc. All signs of moving house (or being a vet come to think of it!).
