A draft protocol
The protocol is planned as an annex to the guide.

Re: RCVS reviewing PIC/DC protocol when dealing with personal health issues

Click here for the full story ...

Re: RCVS reviewing PIC/DC protocol when dealing with personal health issues

Not a bad idea in itself but animal welfare is already covered by 'fitness to practice' aspects in the disciplinary code. Rather worried that they are suggesting medical practitioners 'shop' those of us with medical problems potentially rendering us unfit. Cannot see doctor/patient confidentiality making this a starter.

Perhaps they should be working harder on a more sympathetic process for friends, family and colleagues to report such issues to assist those in trouble rather than this protocol.

Vets with personal health issues require support and common sense. Not sure RCVS is particularly good with either. I suspect those of us that develop health issues are far more likely to hurt ourselves than our patients.

Once a sympathetic/positive reporting and health system has failed then it is time for this type of protocol to be used. Some people will not help themselves and those few individuals may need formal intervention.

Good time to publicise this sort of thing - vets are overcharging, animal beating, fraudulent thieves already according to Panorama and The Daily Mail, now are we going to seen as drunken, drug taking pet axe-murderers in the next press item?

The helplines and vet charities are doing a fantastic job. I can see the place for a protocol to prevent unfit vets from practising until they are fit to return to work this ticks most of the boxes but where is help and support in the protocol?
