For the last 6 years I've been running a very small mobile practice; it has got much busier in the last 8 months but I still

Re: What to put in a CV?
SMP, Statutory maternity pay, should not cost the practice anythink as it is reclaimable from HMRC. In fact small businesses can reclaim 104.5% (I think) of the amount.

Where I am working the head nurse is off on SMP, and with work being quiet she has not been replaced, so the boss is pleased as it is saving him money at the moment
Sadly, although you are right that small business can claim back 104.5% SMP, the employer also has to pay holiday accrued during maternity leave, has one less person to cover other staff holidays and frequently has to use short term staff cover, which is more commonly more expensive.

My staff are all young women who are likely to have children, indeed one has and has returned from maternity leave. In a very small business, the financial effects of staff maternity can be pretty devastating.

Not at all, I have recently employed 6 ladies for my new practice, and my only consideration was experience and personality, 5 out of the 6 are young females perfectly capable of going off on maternity leave at any point. I turned down some that were, shall we say, past that stage of their lives, ( and I'm wording that carefully as I don't think I am being ageist!)

The employment of vets, nurses and receptionists, along with every other profession has become fraught with more difficulties, precisely because people with your thinking and cynicism exist Michael!

I have:

Name, address and contact details at the top

'Personal profile' little paragraph summarising what sort of vet I am, particular areas that interest me and what sort of job I'm after

'Employment' in reverse chronological order, with short statement on each highlighting particular experience gained in each

'Education' in reverse chronological order

'Other Relevant Training & Qualifications' lists things like cpd, OV status, A1 status etc

'Interests' the personal bit about outside interests

Finally references at the end.
