My name's Andy, hope you are all ok.
I'm studying an Animal Management Diploma at college at the moment and I came here to look for inspiration for my final investigative project.
I bought a very nice coloured horse earlier this year whom we affectionately named Pikey as he did initially bear a resemblance to something that ought to be tethered on a road verge. I have since successfully taken the horse eventing but when I tried to discuss its success on an Eventing forum I received an official warning and had my account suspended for 'inciting racial hatred'. In fact the word 'Pikey' would only appear as a line of asterisks so I had to refer to him as P!key instead.

Re: Problems facing today's Vet Surgeon

Pejoratives[1] are words or grammatical forms which denote a negative effect; that is, they express the contempt or distaste of the speaker. copied from wikipedia)

is the word itself not derogatory never mind what context in which it is used?

Anyway I have guided us off topic so I'm sorry about that.

Re: Problems facing today's Vet Surgeon

People are just not as tolerant as they used to be.

Extreme example : Children not being allowed to sing Christmas Carols in case it is "offensive" to Muslims.

Personally a spade is a spade, so long as you are not using the term in a derogatory manner.

Re: Problems facing today's Vet Surgeon

[quote user="katja wagner"]

Well i have to say that i dislike the use of the word Pikey aswell. In all places i have worked so far nurses and vets euqally use it for people who look a bit rough or different then the average client. in the past i tried to find out the reasons for this and discuss its use but i have given up and just dont react to it anymore but i wonder what gives people the right to judge the appearance of others and use a term which usually dosent reflect anything nice.

3 weeks ago i had a lurcher rushed in who managed to jump into a trailer while hunting rabbits and literally split her chest into half, after first aid treatment she was refered to the queens mother hospital fur surgery and came home after a week with a bill paid in excess of 3000£. The owner again was named as Pikey by other staff members, maybe he is one,but i actually do not give a. s...!

well put, this is how I'm trying to say it, just make people maybe stop and think about what they're saying, I don't mean to come over heavy handed!

Re: Problems facing today's Vet Surgeon

Well i have to say that i dislike the use of the word Pikey aswell.

I do understand!

Quote: Pikey is a pejorative slang term used mainly in the United Kingdom[1][2] to refer to Irish Travellers, gypsies or people of low social class.

(Copied from Wikipedia)

That's fine, and if you look up a similar word for black people beginning with N which this forum won't allow me to write (which is absolutely fair enough) in wikipedia you get

"N is a noun in the English language, most notable for its usage in a pejorative context to refer to black people" copied from Wikipedia.

so I'm not sure how they should be viewed differently, and many people do take offense to the word Pikey.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7446274.stm

It is used a lot though and I'm sure Martin didn't mean it in a racist way, it's just that I don't think many people think before using it.

Er I have to point out that you appear so far to be the only one offended by a term which has been in use as slang, for many years. I think you are wrong to criticise Martin without actually understanding what you are criticising!

Pikey is a pejorative slang term used mainly in the United Kingdom[1][2] to refer to Irish Travellers, gypsies or people of low social class. Pikey is also sometimes called a piker in the United States,[3] but a piker in Australia means someone who refuses to do something within a group.[4]

The term pikey as a pejorative appears to be a very old English word, remaining near unchanged, probably in common use during William Shakespeare's lifetime.
