I bought a very nice coloured horse earlier this year whom we affectionately named Pikey as he did initially bear a resemblance to something that ought to be tethered on a road verge. I have since successfully taken the horse eventing but when I tried to discuss its success on an Eventing forum I received an official warning and had my account suspended for 'inciting racial hatred'. In fact the word 'Pikey' would only appear as a line of asterisks so I had to refer to him as P!key instead.

My first colleague and old mate, Lindsay Carlyle used to just write "NERVOUS" at the top of the card reasoning that, if challenged by an affronted client, he would say that it meant that he, Lindsay, was nervous. .....

I overcame that one by using one of the numbers from one of my earlier '13 things clients say' post, or writing epsilon minus on the basis that if they're that thick they won't have read Brave New World and therefore won't sue/report me if they read the notes. This actually reminds me of some poor sod who appeared in the VDS newsletter after being sued for writing ABTO on the notes. It transpired that the dog was referred to a specialist who let the client read the case history and then when she inquired what it meant told her 'animal brighter than owner'. What an AH.

Thanks Cat, I'm the least racially prejudiced person on the planet (I admit to a bit of racial stereotyping for fun) but we have the misfortune to have a permanent 'travellers' camp just down the road. They live on the edge of civilisation, are almost without exception dishonest, thieving, calculating scumbags who never turn away the opportunity to rip someone else off and never pay their dues, tax or any other debt to society but if you do finally force them to pay (they only ever will if you get it out of them up front) they invariably peel the cash off a wad of £50s so thick it makes no impression on it. Quite frankly the term Pikie is too good for them. I feel most sincerely sorry for all decent Irish people that these lot are associated with them just because they have an Irish accent. Anyone who thinks that is a rascist, fascist rant just needs to come and spend a week seeing practice with me and they will change their minds.

Having said that, a few weeks ago I did a house visit to PTS an elderly cat-this really was proper euthanasia, as it was time for it to go-anno domini -and yesterday, the clients didn't just pay, but also gave me a lovely card, and a present

The difference between Katja's client and Martins is that Katja's cared and paid-Martin's did not

It's clients like Martin's that can make this job stressful

It might be worth Royal College contacting those who either voluntarily resiegn from the register, or simply don't bother to renew their subscription, to find out why.

I bet unappreciative, mean bad clients who don't care for their animals would come pretty high on the list !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That and constrained by the apparent need to socially conform to political correctness.

We all make judgments about people [conscious and subconscious] all the time and vocalizing them isn't always bad.

People need to grow up and stop getting upset on other people's behalf - unless Camilla is a pikey and then all is well in the world.

I'm sure we're not the only practice to have 'pet names' for some of our clients that are a little derogatory!

I agree you should be allowed to sing christmas carols etc, but so long as you have quoted wikipedia saying that Pikey is a pejorative term (which they define as :

Pejoratives^[1] are words or grammatical forms which denote a negative effect; that is, they express the contempt or distaste of the speaker. copied from wikipedia)

is the word itself not derogatory never mind what context in which it is used?

Extreme example : Children not being allowed to sing Christmas Carols in case it is "offensive" to Muslims.

That's fine, and if you look up a similar word for black people beginning with N which this forum won't allow me to write (which is absolutely fair enough) in wikipedia you get

"N is a noun in the English language, most notable for its usage in a pejorative context to refer to black people" copied from Wikipedia.

so I'm not sure how they should be viewed differently, and many people do take offense to the word Pikey.

Er I have to point out that you appear so far to be the only one offended by a term which has been in use as slang, for many years. I think you are wrong to criticise Martin without actually understanding what you are criticising!
