I am still struggling to see what reassurance a VMD inspection gives!!!

The reassurance that wise and wonderful government has our best interests at heart even though we don't realise it and that bureaucracy outweighs common sense.

Re: Medicines inspections

Could well be the explantion - it obviously does make a difference if a product is being prescribed 'off licence'. I will check the article again.

Do we need to have our name or initials on each label? Do we need to specify it is for a cat or a dog?[/quote]

Is this not just for medicines supplied under the Cascade? See Para 24 of http://www.vmd.gov.uk/General/VMR/vmgn/VMGNote15.pdf , which comes from the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (certainly since at least 2005). It is also in the BVA 2007 Medicinces Guidance.

Re: Medicines inspections

According to the RCVS news the VMD appear to require the name or the initials of the vet (according to John Fitzgerald of the VMD) to appear on the label. Strange one that!

As I am the only vet in the practice it is a bit of an academic question but most of my clients know the difference between a dog and a cat. Are these requirements the figment of vivid imagination? Could the inspection staff not find something more constructive to do?

He says the system is working well. I am not sure who for - it seems a waste of £250 to me. He also says that many vets find the inspection process very helpful and welcome the reassurance that it brings! I would rather have the reassurance of an extra £250 in my bank account.

Re: Medicines inspections

I've just read that too. No we don't put the initials of the vet on the label, but it is recorded on the computer system, so not sure why it has to be on the label? neither does our label generate the type of animal it is; it has the animals name and owners name obviously. Again why the need for this on the label? The medication has been dispensed or prescribed for the named animal and one would presume the vet who dispenses it knows what species of animal they are treating!
