I once had an aggressive dog that I could not examine. When I told the owner that I needed to muzzle the dog they refused to allow me to do so, telling me that it I vas a vet so it was part of my job to get bitten.

I politely declined to continue the examination.

I've had that at least a couple of times and usually respond by asking them whether they expect their electrician to get electrocuted.

I suggested that I would be more than happy to do so, but that only once I had placed a soft muzzle on the dog. At which point the lady stated that she would prefer to "leave it for today", as she did not want me to muzzle it because the last time the dog was muzzled it took him months to get over it.

Good one in the latest edition of the VDS newsletter about a bloke who goes to a vet with a very ill dog. The VS suspects intestinal FB and advises rads and a possible ex lap. The client refuses on cost grounds and takes the dog away. The dog deteriorates, at which point the owner takes it to a nearby practice who remove a sock from the GI tract, but the animal doesn't survive because of the delay.

The owner then proceeds to sue the original VS for failing to make a diagnosis or to give adequate instructions!

The VDS fought the case based on contemporaneous records and succeeded - maybe there is some justice after all!

Lady complained that we were biased against GSDs, that he was not at all aggressive, and had been noted to be 'laid back, submissive and non fearful' by his trainer. Kicked off when we pre-medded him, would not let the owner remove his primapore (took four people apparently - impressive in a submissive dog) and then tried to bite when in for a post op check.

Re: Chutzpah awards

Today's award in my practice goes to:

the lady and gentleman who presented a young hyper cocker spaniel for a booster, and whilst examining him he made a recognisable attempt to chew my fingers. When the lady in question requested that I examine his ears in more detail, as he would not let them, (the owners) look at it, I suggested that I would be more than happy to do so, but that only once I had placed a soft muzzle on the dog. At which point the lady stated that she would prefer to "leave it for today", as she did not want me to muzzle it because the last time the dog was muzzled it took him months to get over it.

When I pointed out that it would take me months to recover if her dog chewed my fingers to bits, she then stated that perhaps next time someone else within the practice could examine it instead!

Needless to say she was informed that not only was note being placed on the dog's file to the effect that it may require a muzzle to be examined, but that if the dog would not let the owner examine the ear, there was less chance of aynoe else within the practice being able to persuade it otherwise without the use of a muzzle.
