I'd not thought of the RCVS PSS manual. That
does seem to give the impression that it's ok for non-vets to package
up (and hand over) the medicines if the vet has authorised them. I must
admit I'd rather do it myself - have nightmares of eg someone putting
up norocarp 50mg instead of noroclav 50mg for a cat.

BVA
protocols are a bit out of date - according to them we must provide
written prescriptions free of charge, and refuse to supply any wormers
or flea products for non-clients..
As for what 'prescribing' means, I would say checking the drug once it has been counted out/taken off the shelf etc. and if the tablet is not easily identifiable then I would like the original pot to be next to the drug (eg for Vidalta 10mg/15mg, they look the same).
I'd say prescribing is deciding on the drug,
dose, length of treatment etc but most of the stuff I'd read preferred
to use "authorise" - and I wasn't sure whether that was prescribing plus packing
it up/checking after it had been packed aswell, or just OK-ing the drug for someone else to pack. Handing it over once packed can be done by any "competent person"

Still seems to be some contradiction about whether a vet can "authorise" repeats of POM-V flea/worm products ie whether it is "authorise each transaction individually" or authorise that it can be repeated x times or for x months without having to OK it each time

Re: Prescribing and supplying

There is new guidance in the revised Practice Standards Manual, on the RCVS website, look at section 8 on Medicines, which applies to nearly all practices whether or not they are in the PSS, 8.4 in particular has updated guidance on the supply of medicines in the absence of a veterinary surgeon, this has been agreed with VMD.

If you are a member of BVA there may be further help with writing protocols on their website as well.

Re: Prescribing and supplying

Hi there,

I work as a locum so I see how it's done in several different practices, but I have not read up the guidelines myself.

Usually I would expect to authorise every POM-V including parasiticides- and by checking I mean reading the animal's notes and checking weight/when last seen; however, if it is busy I'll settle for asking the nurse "seen it in the last 12month? checked it's weight?".

I recently heard that pets in the same household can be seen as a herd so if one animal in the household has been seen within 12months, then all can have flea/worm tx. That means that I have been telling owners wrong and insisting on prescription checks for the semi-feral cat that has never been seen before but is impossible to tablet so has to have Profender!

As for what 'prescribing' means, I would say checking the drug once it has been counted out/taken off the shelf etc. and if the tablet is not easily identifiable then I would like the original pot to be next to the drug (eg for Vidalta 10mg/15mg, they look the same).

For a vet to be present at handing over sounds completely impractical- I suppose we could hire a vet to sit in reception all day for that task alone!
