does anyone have a good recommendation for books/ websites/ software that gives you a really good checklist for the sort of things you can claim for in the veterinary profession? I've filled in the HMRC SA page for the last couple of years, but they seem very hazy on giving you information on what is deductible, which i guess makes sense, but leaves me feeling I'm not getting back what i could.

it is possible to join the VAT flat rate scheme as both a self employed person, or as a limited company. There is no minimum threshold, but I think a maximum one of around £60k -£65k. I have not got around to signing up to it yet, guess I need to. In short you charge 17.5% VAT on your work, then 10% (9% in the first year) is handed over to the government, you keep the difference.

I have been a locum for 9 years, and used an accountant for the first 2 years, I now do my own self assesment tax return, fairly eary and straightforward really. There are various software packages that make it easier, I use taxcalc which costs around £20, but you can do it directly on HMRC website but it is not very user friendly I find.

I run my locuming as a limited company but I am not sure if you have to be one for this scheme. I also don't know about back dating tax, I have enough trouble with the concept of setting things against tax! I would ask your accountant

Hi,

Do you need to be a limited company to sign up to this scheme or can you do it as self-employed? Are you able to back date income from the last tax year against the VAT- I think you could do up to 3 years on ordinary VAT if limited company-may have that wrong.

Hi,

On the 'Flat Rate VAT' scheme, there is lower limit for how much you need to be earning but if you go over the VA threshold (60,000 ish?) you are no longer eligible. It is basically a scheme to encourage small businesses to sign up to VAT by giving them some money back.

I am also a locum and use Nick Lawrence at Moore Scarrott in Somerset, a specialist veterinary accountants. They have been excellent. Make sure you get on the flat rate vat scheme that Cat mentioned - you charge the practices vat (which makes no difference to them) and get to keep half of it. Very easy to do all the vat returns yourself (last one I did took 10 minutes) so money for nothing really!

Hi Robin,

I am a locum and I have a great accountant. John Sower who runs Bertram Kidson is a specific veterinary accountant and he has been very helpful over the past year. In particular he fixed me up on a special VAT scheme which means I get a 'cash back' type deal on any VAT I charge.
